You know the drill: they're the shows, movies and books that deal with high school romances and adolescent drama, with the supernatural twist of throwing vampires (and often other creatures of darkness) into the mix.

I tried reading the motherload of them all, Twilight, after my 29 year old sister got obsessed with it, but I just didn't get any enjoyment out of it. It was so badly written, the characters and relationships so poorly thought out, that the only emotions I felt while reading it were disappointment and embarrassment.

Other popular series that are about highschoolers and bloodsuckers include Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The Vampire Diaries and True Blood. Being a fan of vampire stuff in general, I want to try out all three of these series, but I'm scared that I'm just going to get a repeat of my terrible experience with Twilight.

My question to you, my fellow ghoulish-ly minded Aspies, is this: Have any of you seen Buffy, Vampire Diaries and/or True Blood, and are they any better than Twilight?

I have watched a bit of Vampire Diaries, I think it does a better job then Twilight with Vampires not sparkly. Though I still question the wisdom of one Vampire when he tries to say that another vampire isn't as bad and tough as he lets on, only to be completly shocked when the other Vampire kills someone just to show that he is tough. Why are so many vampires who look like teenagers shown to only have the wisdom of a teenager and not show actual wisdom.

I was a bit young with Buffy, but I have seen a few episodes, my highschool english teacher was a big fan of Buffy, from what I know it is pretty good, though it can get a bit cheesy along the lines of many such 90s shows.

There is also a range of anime/manga, Like Karin or Rosario + Vampire, a new one started recently and has a thread on this forum called "Dance in the Vampire Bund", it has a vampire stuck as a young girl, though she is apparently quite tough.

Try Let The Right One In

http://www.lettherightoneinmovie.com/

The screenplay was written by the author of the book, which I can't remember.

Buffy is very inconsistent, some of it is very good, but most of it is not. It's kind of like a soap opera at times, although there is a more intelligent side to it if you have patience. To be honest, I only really watched it because I had a bit of crush on Eliza Dushku, and she isn't in that much of it.

I was skeptical of Buffy when I was younger. After a friend tried getting me into it and me not really caring I eventually did start watching it years later and found it and the other show Angel to be very enjoyable while not taking itself too seriously overall. As I've come to realize most things created by Joss Wheden are gold. (Firefly/Serenity)

True blood is pretty good too with lots of good nudity to boot. I'm hoping the next season starts again soon!

Let the Right One In (book/movie) and The Historian (book). I hear Thirst (movie) is good too. Vampire Hunter D. Dracula and Salem's Lot.

It's like a classic vampire tale. I'm don't like Twilight and True Blood so much. I forgot Anne Rice, she's good. The Hunger is good. Fright Night.

I liked how The Historian focused on Vlad the Impaler.

I hear there is a Dracula sequel written by one of Stoker's ancestors. There is an actual history book on Vlad the Impaler that looks interesting.

Check out

The Blood Countess by Andrei Codrescu. It's about Elizabeth of Bathory who was a real person in history and bathed in virgin's blood. Andrew Codrescu grew up in Romania under Communist rule.

Look For Me By Moonlight by Mary Downing Hahn, it may be a book for ages 13+, but it isn't as cliche as the typical vampire romance books, especially not the ending.

from what ive heard of 'twilight' its not so much a vampire genre per se but more a crossover into adolescent girl territory. So nothing at all like 'true blood' which ive seen, and loved.

Theres a recent british show called 'being human' which i really like too.
