The first time you went to the movie theater alone.

For me it was Infinity War

Used to be a little indie cinema in Southampton called Harbour Lights. Saw quite a few movies there alone because it was always empty.

The Strongest Man In The World. It was a Disney movie back when Kurt Russel was making Disney movies. I was still in grade school back then. Long since then, that neighborhood theater turned into a porn theater, then later, a Dejavu strip club.

Mine was The Incredibles 2, if I remember right.

It was an end-of-year school outing to like, this massive shopping centre out of town, not the most fun place for me, but I'd decided to go there instead of the theme park in the hope that this would allow me more social interaction. Unfortunately it didn't end up like that, and I couldn't find the people I wanted to stick with and forgot to actually organize anything, y'know, like a sensible person! So I ended up finding my way into the theater, and I was really hyped for that movie, because the original really held up and it'd been so long, so I was hoping it ran off of Blade Runner 2049 logic and time had made it so they'd written a better movie...

...They didn't, but honestly being alone in a movie theater, not having to worry about wisecracking to the other person or whether you chose the right movie or not, just you and the screen...oh my god it was so good.

The first one I explicitly remember was The Godfather a few weeks after high school graduation.

It was what happened after that brings it to mind.

I went to the movie in a nearby town in which people from my town aren't always welcome. After the movie, I was driving down Main Street and someone yelled at me from along the train tracks, "If you're from (my town), come over here."

My immediate thoughts were, "I made it all the way through high school without getting the crap beat out of me here and now it's going to happen. I might as well get it over with."

So I pulled over. Immediately, one guy got in front of the car, one behind, one on the right door, and three on the left.

The conversation went something like this:

Ringleader: You're from (my town)?
Me: Yep.
Ringleader: Are you a Jesus Freak?
Me: Nope.
Ringleader: That's good because if you were, we were going to beat you up.

For the younger crowd, this was several months after the movie, Jesus Christ, Superstar came out. After seeing the movie, lots of people started doing things like preaching on street corners and were called "Jesus Freaks". A guy I knew in high school from my town had been going to that town and preaching on the street corners. We drove very similar cars and so they thought I was him.

After that, we had a fairly nice and routine conversation. The guys from the front, back, and right side of my car came over and we talked for a while.

It turned out that one of them had kinfolk who had lived in a dugout for decades and were among my nearest neighbors. I also knew his sister, but he didn't hold that against me.

They were serious about beating me up, too. That was the mindset of high school kids and younger adults in that town back then. Nearly exactly two years later I was standing in almost the exact same place talking to someone else from there. He had graduated from high school a year earlier. About half an hour after I left, the sheriff's department swooped in and arrested him for chasing a guy out of town, beating the crap out of him, and burning his pickup to the ground.

The odd thing was that he was barely out of jail after spending 11 months of the previous 12 months in jail for stealing coats, goats, or cokes (I never did catch which).

He's still around. I see him on occasion when I'm in that town.

Anyway, to the best of my knowledge, the first time I ever went to a movie by myself was to see The Godfather.

Never. At this point I feel like it would be way too weird.

Closest I've been was at the drive-in once: for the second movie my friend wanted to see something that looked bad (he confirmed that it was), and I didn't want to watch it, so I took my folding chair and sat at a different screen and suffered with the crappy built-in speakers. It was Chronicles of Riddick, 2004.

I do not recall, but it may have been likely in my early college years.

Mine was probably tge second Lord of the Rings movie. We were moving, so it was a little to get me out of the house.

Heaven Can Wait (1978)
I road the bus downtown and transferred to the mall on the far west of town. It was a wonderful year for going to the movies by myself. I saw so many film over the summer, and then I went to college.

It is possible I took the bus a downtown theater in 1976 to see Murder by Death, but I'm not 100% about that.

Prior to this I got my mom or my older sister to drive me, and I often when with my brother.

I have done this countless times and don't regret it but my first solo trip to the movie was Erin Brockovich because I really liked Julia Roberts movies at the time. I remember watching the movie and knew she was going to win an academy award for that role too, which she did. In fact, I remember her winning and making her speech.
