I've spotted a few characters on TV shows with AS-like traits. Have you?

My first entry is Richard on "Beauty & the Geek", season One, now being rerun on WB.

Temperance Brennan on "Bones".

Detective Goram (sp?) on "Law & Order CI". I still remember when he was interrogating that poor HFA suspect and psychologizing him out the ying-tang, and my first thought was "Hey - pot, meet kettle! Like YOU have any room to talk?"

Quite possibly Adrian Monk

Doctor Yang on Grey's Anatomy. Every time she's on, I keep checking her for Vulcan-pointed ears.

Boston Legal (Tuesdays, ABC) has a story arc in which Alan Shore is defending a co-worker who has a brilliant legal mind and an encyclopedic knowledge of the law, but who has not made partner and never will because of his poor social skills and because his quirks make him a figure of mockery among the partners and the staff. They are also afraid of him because - back in 2000 - he pushed another lawyer who made fun of him. This time they mocked him even at the partnership party for the firm's Ken Doll lawyer, and he snapped again and helf the cake knife to the throat of the worst offender. To the people at the firm (except Alan) this is simply proof he's a whack job. As one of them put it, "'Hands' went nuts," in a tone of voice that indicated '*Completely* without cause." Yeah, right.

If this doesn't ring a few bells here, nothing will.

Marshall Flinkman, the gadget/tech guy from Alias, comes to mind.

One Aspie coming immediately to mind is Cliff Clavin, the mailman on Cheers. Obsessed with trivia, completely oblivious to the fact that everyone else at the bar can't stand him.

The professor in the simpsons who always says weird words that noone has ever heard of. Ooh and good point with Bones. I think Bones herself is Aspie.

Autistic traits are littered round Larry Davids work (Seinfeld & Curb Your Enthusiasm) but especially in Seinfeld, occasionally a very aspie/HFA character will appear in just one scene.

You mean Dr. House? I really doubt it.

i think Dr House said 'i cant tell whether people are lying or not, so i just assume they're lying all the time'

maybe not, but good social logic all the same!

I know this was an old thread, but it was relevant. My son and I love Criminal Minds, never miss an episode. He's 11 and I won't let him post alone yet, so agreed to post with/for him on this one :D

If you ask me/us, Dr. Reid is an AS poster boy. It seems each week in the beginning they actually went to pains to incorporate something from the "official" diagnosis code in order to prove their point, many times quietly and smartly, sometimes not so much (like when the rogue FBI agent who had the twin girl kidnapped talked about Gideon not seeing his coworker's "autistic traits"). I just thought that one went too far. However, showing Reid's discomfort with social experiences was usually handled very well, and my son really identified with the time he just had to decompress and sat indian style on his desk chair and *spinned* around.

In addition to that, it is just a good show. It has also helped push my son's interests away from trains and dinosaurs and he's now in a forensics class at the local university. I think Dr. Reid is a good "mentor" of sorts. For us anyway it helped my son see that AS is just a different way, not a loss of a way altogether.
