What was the first anime you watched?

My first animé programs – barring “de facto animé” shows that are considered Western cartoons but were animated in Japan – were Pokémon, Sailor Moon, & Dragon Ball Z. Of course, I might have seen some Hello Kitty merchandise before watching any of the animé I just mentioned.

Since writing my post 4 years ago where I said that Samurai Pizza Cats was my first anime, I have discovered that Maple Town was an anime as well. I watched that as a toddler, and it was one of my favourite shows at the time, so in retrospect, Maple Town was the first anime I saw and loved.

There are some anime stylings in there (naturally as a Japanese studio took care of the animation), which is most apparent in the interpretation of the character designs as well as the animation in some of the early episodes ('Roll For It', 'Divide & Conquer', 'Fire On The Mountain'). I would, however, not consider it an anime, as the plotting and storyboards are all American, the overall style and the setting are geared toward an American audience.

Ranma 1/2 for me. But Sailor Moon got me in the fandom for good.

When i was a little kid it was the original dragon ball, but my first "real" anime was death note.

The first anime I ever saw was probably the YTV dub of Sailor Moon when I was about 2 1/2-3 years old. I didn't quite know what to make of it, but I watched it because it was on. Later on, when I was 6 I remember becoming somewhat obsessed with Pokemon and Dragonball Z.

When I was a bit older, I also watched a bit of the Yu-Gi-Oh series, partly because my dad was obsessed with Magic: The Gathering at the time and I thought that being a Yu-Gi-Oh fan was a way of getting back at it. Little did I know that I would become an MtG fan later on and dismiss Yu-Gi-Oh as a ripoff.

I never truly got into "real" anime the way a lot of my friends did over the last few years though. Like, I've watched various series with them, and a lot of them I actually quite enjoyed (Black Jack in particular, as the main character is a badass surgeon ), but I've never really been anything more than a "casual" fan.

I think the first anime I watched was Knights of the Zodiac. I only watched a few episodes of that, though. I don't really remember it.

Either Pokemon, or Sailor Moon. DBZ was what actually got me into anime though.

Sailor Moon (the DIC dub--yes, it was pretty awful, but I would never have known what anime was without it)
Inuyasha (thank you, Adult Swim)
Fullmetal Alchemist (ditto}
Yu Yu Hakusho (Cartoon Network's TOONAMI)
Paranoia Agent (Adult Swim again)
Does .hack://SIGN count? (Also Adult Swim)

Later on, Knights of the Zodiac. Since then, not much else. Tried to re-watch Sailor Moon in Japanese, and I also discovered the live-action series (it was a lot better than it sounds).

It was either Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball Z. I kinda remember seeing them both at the same time, so I'm not certain which one I saw first.

Technically Pokémon, but if we are going by first anime watched to completion then it would be Chobits.

Mirai Nikki. It's the only anime that captured my attention while I was attending an anime club last year. You see, the only reason I was going was because a girl I like also attended, and I happen to like the anime art style. That being said...I spent most of my time there asking, "Why doesn't he just shoot her?"

It captured my interest, but not enough to really sell me on the genre. I tend to prefer something a bit more serious, and the woman who runs the anime club only ever shows weird stuff and a bunch of magical girl animes that make me want to vomit. I've been meaning to watch Attack on Titan now that it's on Netflix, but I could never motivate myself enough to tear myself away from League of Legends and sit down and watch it.
