CyclopsSummers, I hope I'm not being too picky, but one of your comments seemed ambiguous to me:

"At the same time I'm wondering how much of the objective quality of children's television and animation in particular, is tied to financial resources."

Did you mean that cartoons might be more successful if they have bigger budgets? Or did you mean that cash cow cartoons tend to be derivative because more thought is usually put into merchandise than programming?

It was more of a throwaway thought on how a period of economical difficulty results in the production of a batch of cartoons that are of 'lower quality'. Of course, even among those cartoons, one could find a couple of gems.

I don't usually watch anything on Cartoon Network simply because many of the shows are simply annoying.
Disney Channel performed an MTV years ago and as a result I never go on it on anymore.
Nickelodeon seems to be following Disney's footsteps, the shows that used to be good don't have good episodes anymore.
The only things I watch are Ninjago, Teen Titans and the Hub.

When I was a kid a lot of adults hated the stuff us kids liked to watch. Oh, they were so merchandise-driven and basically brainwashed into wanting the toy they were really a commercial of. The Smurfs were drug addicts because they lived in mushroom houses, Pac-Man turned kids into video zombies, Ninja Turtles made kids think sewers were cool, fun places to play in, Superman made kids jump off of rooftops thinking they could fly. Typical Moral guardian nonsense and it just made us like 'em even more. But now - UGH! UGH!! ! UUUUUGH!! ! :eew: I know that's what every generation thinks but it's just gotten really out of hand. Boring, stupid, too violent or too gross. Not an ounce of imagination in the whole bunch. I weep for kids who have never seen classic, uncensored Looney Toons or Disney like I did and have no clue about their awesome-ness. I hate the fact that Sesame Street has been taken over by that little red pest Elmo and it's not the street I grew up with. I really miss Mr. Dressup, may he RIP. He was the main reason I even watched CBC every morning, even as a young adult. I think it's the end of everything and not just TV. :(

I loved the old Looney Tunes cartoons when I was a kid, and it made me sad when they started butchering them to make them suitable for TV. I understand the reasons for political correctness, but it's just sacrelige to take these classics and cut parts out of them to appease some person who grew up under a rock not watching them in their original form.

I mean, I wasn't around for when they ran as theatrical shorts in the 30s and 40s, but my grandparents used to have a pretty comprehensive VHS of some of the old cartoons, which I watched all the time at their place. As far as I can tell, none of the cartoons on that tape were edited for violence, though obviously they didn't have any of the racist WWII shorts. :P
