Annihilation - confusing, somewhat above my pay grade [intellectually] in terms of easily following the plot. It was beautiful to the eyes, though.

Five female scientists enter a zone known as The Shimmer to find out why soldiers who went there never came back. Even though the women were woefully inadequate for the mission, they went anyway. There were more holes in this film than a homeless man's blanket, but since all life within the zone gets rapidly mutated, the variations in the flora and fauna were sometimes beautiful, sometimes grotesque to watch. A lot of money went into set design, that's for sure.

The Handmaiden

A pretentious Korean art film that, at nearly three hours long, makes for a perfect sleep aid. I gave this a 4 on IMDb only because the set design and cinematography was top notch. Recommended? Nope.

Mechanic: Resurrection

What a joke. This was a Jason Statham action flick but it was obviously created for the money, not for the love of trying to produce anything new for the screen. All the actors practically phoned in their parts. They were all so one-dimensional they may as well had been cardboard cutouts of the real thing. The filmmakers didn't have an original bone in their collective bodies when conjuring up this derivative stinker. Pass.

"Never let me go".

This is a movie I would recommend to everyone who takes interest in dystopic dramas. I may have found a new favorite movie to add to my list and the tears at the end of the movie wasn`t only because of what was happening on screen but because the movie gave so many associations to life in school and with friends but also the way people who are brought up to identify with a certain "duty" or destiny in society don`t have the power inside or outside to fight the injustice done to them but rather accept it as "normal". The character played by Carey Mulligan really got under my skin. The final words from one of the main characters really struck a cord in me and pointed toward a much larger topic...

When I watched the movie I found myself searching for the pain, the rage and the fear these people probably would carry inside but maybe due to how their destinies were deeply rooted in their societies structure and social expectations, they seemed to just carry their fate with acceptance although their lives were burdened by it never the less. The pain is there, you just never see them express it through opposition or rage against the system. Or maybe they don`t understand or admit where the pain is coming from? They just live with it and don`t fight it. The hole thing was very interesting and thought-provoking.

This is not an action movie about rebellion and fighting against ones oppressors even though it could have been. Instead you see the main characters try to make the best out of life and that is where you find the plot of the movie. It is a story about the lives of three people living as servants of a good purpose(Maybe that is why they accept it?) Trying to live their lives in a way we all can relate to. The movie is meant to take place during the 70`s, 80`s and 90`s so it feels relevant in that sense too for someone like myself who grew up then.

You find a really touching love drama in there and the social drama that always goes on in schoolyards and among kids. There were so many details to notice and reflect upon and so much more I could have said about it. The movie was beautifully made with really good acting. I loved it. But it may be too painful for me to watch again. But still I would like to know more about the world these three lived in...
