Some things I've watched recently:
Inception - Pretty good as action films go. The ending was a bit predictable, but really, how else could you end that film?
Precious - Some really good performances. The mother's revealation about how she allowed Precious to be abused was a bit too self-aware for my tastes. My guess is a person who could let that happen could not have that level of awareness of her own motivations. But still, a pretty good film.
Videodrome - The last time I saw this was when it was first released. Still pretty gross. There are aspects to it that seem quite prophetic in much the same way "Network" was.
If You Could Say It In Words - Generally a pretty good film. The story structure is a bit weak and the film makers, when at a loss for where the story should go, seem to resort to having the characters kiss. The night club concert scene drags a bit and looks more like an excuse to feature a band. It also looks like it was shot on video while the rest of the film is apparently shot on film. Also the sound mix is kind of marginal and I had to ride to volume control through parts of the film. But that comes with low budget film making and it's pretty well done considering. But as for a character study, it is definitely worth watching.
"Five Easy Pieces" and "The King of Marvin Gardens" - Both films were directed by Bob Rafelson and are part of Criterion's BBS collection. These were among the best of the films in this series, along with "The Last Picture Show"
"The Passion of Joan of Arc" - This is a silent film that depicts Joan of Arc's trial and execution. Shot primarily in stark close ups, the performances dominate everything about this film. I thought the woman playing Joan over did it a bit, but certainly her performance was a good deal more subtle than many during the silent era. The excecution is quite graphic with long, lingering shots of Joan being consumed in flames. Kind of disturbing.
