definitely George Carlin, he more or less invented the modern type of stand up comedy. I can entertain myself by the hour by watching the snippets of him on youtube. Oh sure, I know he wasn't the first to use filthy language, but the way he used it and his routine "the seven words" remains hilarious.

+1. Though I prefer Bill Cosby. Also, I love Tim Minchin - one of the few comedians I know to combine comedy and musical humour and make it work so effectively.

Yes, I went to see him live and he was great, as expected. The mention of Tim Minchin reminded me of him.

I've seen him live three, one in the west end, once at the Bristol Hippodrome and once at his big outdoor gig at Ashton Gate.

And for anyone who was at Ashton Gate that night

I enjoyed Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy in the past. Eddie Izzard, Jim Gaffigan and Bill Engvall are fun to watch. Richard Jeni was hilarious (RIP). Lewis Black and Christopher Titus I love because they're funny and make you think at the same time.

But my funny bone belongs absolutely to Louis CK. He is just brilliant in his delivery, and will talk about ANYTHING without being really offensive about it. He used to be really bad with the F-bombs, but he's cleaned that up a lot. I think he's the best comic working today and belongs in the rare air pantheon of comics like George Carlin and Lenny Bruce.

Two comics that I left off because they aren't technically stand-up but rather sketch comedians are Rowan Atkinson and Monty Python. Yes, I know Python is a "they" not a "He". Monty Python is the gauge I use when I meet someone new. If they like Python, we are going to hit it off because our senses of humor are going to be in sync. If they don't like or "get" Python, that tells me something as well -- that we likely WON'T understand each other's humor. It pretty fool-proof.

My Mom used to hate Monty Python, but my Dad and I thought it was a riot when we'd stay up to watch it on PBS years ago.

There aren't a million that I like, but here are some that make me cry with laughter: Jerry Seinfeld, Robin Williams, Jim Gaffigan, Eddie Izzard, and Ellen DeGeneres immediately spring to mind.
