I watched the 1st episode of The Vampire Diaries tonight, and here is my first impression:

Literally within the first 10 minutes of the show, there was murder and drugs. I thought "We're off to a good start", because Twilight has none of that. I read in an article that there's sex involved at some point too. Although Stefan and Elena do physically resemble Edward and Bella, their personalities already seem different, especially when comparing Elena to Bella.

I admit that as an adult, I felt a little embarrassed watching a show about high schoolers, but at least in Diaries the vampires actually look and behave more like vampires than their Twilight counterparts ( ie they have fangs and actually kill people). There were even some scary moments here and there! I'm particularly interested in Stefan's psychotic vampire brother Damon. I like that he has softer facial features than Stefan, and he seems charismatic, as a good villain should.

All in all, I was not disappointed in watching Vampire Diaries, because it successfully managed to combine traditional vampire viciousness with teen drama. I do not regret watching it one bit, and... I'm actually looking forward to more. :)

I really liked the second Vampire Hunter D movie, "Bloodlust." I thought it was better than the first.

I was a big Buffy fan. I always thought it had very good writing.

As far as books, there's a series I liked but I don't think I've ever heard (or read) anyone mention it: The Sonja Blue series by Nancy Collins. I've read most of them and thought they were very good.

They have translated most of the novels on which the anime is based.

When looking at vampire stories, anything is better than Twilight because Twilight should not be counted as a vampire story.

True Blood is amazing, and I can recommend Buffy having never seen it but having had two friends who were completely obsessed with it.

I'll also add my vote for Let The Right One In. It's an excellent movie and you should definitely check it out. And someone else mentioned Being Human, which is also a really great show. The three main characters are a vampire, werewolf, and ghost, so it focuses on the supernatural in general as opposed to just vampires, but it's a really fun show (which is actually on in a few hours, I can't wait!)

There are also plenty of great non romantic-vampire stories that are more in the horror/action genre, but you didn't ask for those so I'll stick with what I said above.

If you're looking for something different from the Dracula fare but still better than Twilight, what else than Vampire Knight? I have the first two volumes of the manga and it may be shojo and set in a school, but it's a twist on the vampy concept I love.

the 'nosferatu' 1979 remake

a more-or-less straight dracula adaption, as classy a vampire movie as your ever likely to see. Its old-school where vampire is portrayed as a wretched, lonely figure rather than the charismatic psycho-sexual super-villain that is popular these days. Not big on scares, but the cinematography is fantastic.

There is a 2000 film I watched a while back called "Shadow of the Vampire" which is a fictional makeing of 'Nosferatu'. It goes along the lines in search of creating the movie they find a location and it's master to act as the villain and it turns out he is really a vampire. It was pretty cool with switching to thr original looing footage for "filming" and has the more groteque vampire.

There is also a Werner Herzog remake of Nosferatu with actor Klaus Kinski.

Let the Right One In, a Swedish film that released last year is excellent. Also, Alan Ball's True Blood series is well-written escapist fun.

|True blood is fantastic, but is very very rude! I have read all of the Charlaine Harris books which the TV series is based on. These are however impo not as good as what they have done with the show so far , except for maybe the 'Eric' scenes, which I miss! I did however enjoy the twilight saga books which were much better than the films, and I know you said you didn't like. If you enjoy manga and anime, I enjoy Vampire knight. Interview with a vampire is supposed to be a fantastic book - the film is good too. I am legend is also another book that is supposed to be great too.

The Vampire Diaries

Good, creepy fun.

Twilight is terrible. Enough said.
