Does anyone actually watch the DVD commentaries?

I only listen to commentaries if it's a movie I really like.

You ever get sick of people thinking something you do is weird? What's their motivation? If the commentary is included in so many videos, that's the film industry saying it's pretty typical to want to hear it. I certainly do.

Mind you, there's different quality commentaries. I like less technical stuff and more anecdotal, so I favor directors and actors. Even though the movies have gotten pretty annoying to me, the Lord of the Rings commentaries were especially enjoyable because of the way they were done. I believe this was on the extended cut collections, but it's been a while. They have multiple options, and one is the actors. They layered separate commentary from many of the major players, and got the four "hobbits" to comment in one session, so whenever their comments come up, they generally crack jokes, often at each others' expense. Sean Astin tries to be serious but it doesn't work. And the dude who playing Denethor is as likable in real life as he is obnoxious in the film.

A Knight's Tale also had good commentary, as they use the chance to repeatedly reply with sarcasm to people who had scoffed at the anachronisms in the movie... "Apparently 'We Will Rock You' wasn't recorded until later on. Really? I didn't know that." And the guy who played Chaucer commented with the director because they were buddies.

And Weird Al commenting on UHF is almost better than the original movie.

But yeah, I watch 'em! I'm backed up on that, in fact. It's hard with kids around. I still want to see the commentary on "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead." Not kid stuff.

Me, but I don't do it all the time.

I love listening to them, it's probably the only dvd extra I watch. I use to listen to most of the commentaries on my Simpsons dvds, certain commentaries more than once because it made the episodes more funnier when they laughed at their own jokes.

I do occasionally. I often watch the special features, though.

I sometimes watch outtakes and stuff, but I've never bothered with commentaries.

I believe the first ever commentaries I listened to were to Spider-Man and Scooby Doo.

I usually make time to watch the commentary if I got it from the library as they give you a longer time to keep the video than my local store does. It's interesting, but I hate it when the commentator rambles on and it's not relevant to what's onscreen. Why is it commentators have such trouble staying on topic?

Commentaries are one of the best things about DVDs and Blu-Rays, IMO.

I feel a little repulsed by the idea of listening to someone telling me what I'm supposed to be seeing or hearing incidental anecdotes while viewing a film. I think the film should speak for itself. Few can bear repeat viewing in a short period for me anyway.

Depends on the show or the movie.

A good commentary follows along with what's on screen and the commentators give great insight and info into the production/writing of what is going.

A bad commentary is one where the commentators failed to even recall what's going on on screen and thus dont have anything to say or...they go completely off topic and talk about people or things that are completely off topic.

The Simpsons DVD commentaries used to be great and fun. Now they're just awful and all the commentators want to do is talk about celebrities and are barely watching the episode. Man I was mad that so many commentaries on the Season 13 set were like this!

DVD commentaries and special features in general, in a roundabout sort of way, make me really mad. The reason for that is that when I love a UFC event that I buy on DVD, I go read the reviews on Amazon. What are all the two-star reviews about? Not enough special features! The way I see it, the special features are not the reason to buy a DVD, the movie/event/whatever you want on DVD is.

I have watched the Alien and Halloween comentaries. They were ok but at times I got bored and wished I was watching without comentaries.

I think they should start selling DVD's that give all the unedited footage from films and allow the viewer to edit the films themselves. That would be pretty good.

Well they do the first part, and there's software that allows you to edit it yourself, however, if you distribute the edited movie, it's still considered a violation of copyright law.
