I kept thinking that Mary had AS, but I guess she wasn't supposed to have it, although I kept thinking how the way that she didn't have any friends and only liking the color brown made it seem like she had AS. Overall, great movie.
I think Mary was just a typical little kid who could relate to her penpal Max in a lot of ways because he too was very child-like about certain things in life.
