i have no hypothesis on the matter because i do not believe it to be true.

i do not have one iota of interest in anime. to me it is a waste of time to even engage in speculation as to it's possible merits.

since you have concluded that it is true that AS people all like anime, i guess you will also conclude that because i do not then i am not AS.

What's your hypothesis (I refuse to say theory) explaining why aspies and some auties like anime so much? Or if any psychologist has looked into this before, what's their explanation? I think it's similar to the Thomas the Tank Engine explanation. In anime, the facial expressions are really obvious and are often sustained. In live action stuff and non-Japanese cartoons, facial expressions are usually less obvious. Not to imply that this necessarily applies to those who don't understand normal facial expressions, rather that the ones on anime are more meaningful and influence our minds and emotions more than the less obvious facial expressions. Anyways what's your opinion/the professional opinion?

Have you done a properly designed survey or poll to establish your hypothesis? If not, you are presuming a great deal which is not in evidence.

I really don't get why aspies/auties like it. I think anime is too cutesy and shallow for the most part.

I apologize for my ambiguous statement. I didn't wish to imply that all aspies like anime, I just meant that from my observations, I've seen a significantly larger amount of aspies who watch anime or read manga than I've observed in a regular setting. I didn't mean that the majority of aspies necessarily likes anime either, since I know many aspies who do not. But for example, I went to a private school consisting entirely of aspies. In my class there were about 8 or 9 students. In total, 4 of them watched anime or read manga on a regular basis. I also once joined an anime club at a public high school that had about 30 members. I didn't talk to all of them of course, but out of 15 people or so I have observed or spoken to, at least 5 of them had multiple common AS traits. That means that probably at least 1 out of 6 of them had aspergers. Comparing that to the known statistic for autism (about 1 in 150, was it?) my observation shows an apparent correlation between AS and Anime club membership as opposed to NTs with Anime Club membership. I have also asked this to speech teachers, social skills teachers, and the like, and many of them also say they have noticed a tendency for aspies to read manga and watch anime. I assumed that others may have observed this correlation, and was curious about the opinions of those who have as to why they believe it seems to exist. Lastly, the reason I called it a hypothesis is because it is essentially true to the definition of a hypothesis: a guess based on an observation made, not necessarily with data to back it up yet. If I had data with a strong correlation it would be a theory. Again, I do not think that all aspies watch anime, and again I am truly sorry for being unclear and for offending those I have offended.

On a side note, I'm wondering why it came across that I was implying that all aspies like anime. Perhaps because I said "and some auties"? If so, again I'm sorry.

I always hated animae because it was okay for everyone to like that and be genuinaly obsessed with it but if people found out about my meerkat and Lion King obsessions I was treated like a freak.

I think that it's because anime signifies an escape to younger and happier days, for a lot of us.

Well, I'm a little befuddled by all the posts re hypothesis's and who said what, so here's my own view sitting all by itself :D ...
I think that the ratio of people who are anime fans amongst NT and those with Autism and AS will be pretty much similar. There's a huge "cult" out there into them, and I guess maybe more Aspies know about it ( and not necessarily be fans) as we spend more time being "antisocial" and browsing the net etc etc.

I personally despise anime, hehe!

Although this can not be counted towards any statistics or evidence for the so called hypothesis because am not yet diagnosed with AS.
But I will say that anyone I personally know with AS ( five, so not that many!) is not a fan.
And a couple of other NT people I am friendly with are pretty hard core fans regarding anime

I don't like anime/manga. I had a boyfriend who liked it, he tried to get me into and I just couldn't get interested.

My love for anime has been killed off by morons of racial profiling. Apparently if you're a white male who's into anime it's normal and cool but if you're a half-Asian girl who likes anime, you're a Asian stereotype. Plus it didnt help that I stood out too much in the anime club I was in for being an attractive Asian girl. I felt excluded and quite uncomfortable alot in that club just for that.

Plus the anime that's on these days is just not all that interesting. Good anime is a rarity to find and I just stick to watching them on Youtube but I cant even do that anymore without cringing.

Well, I`m not saying that all Aspies like anime, but when I went to my psychologist, he had told me that in all his time practicing psychology (about 8 years) that he`d only ever worked with three girls (me included) that were into anime, and they were all somewhere on the autism spectrum.

I myself like the detail of the drawings and the artwork have in them. Some of the artistry is amazing.
