Tasha Yar from Star Trek the Next Generation
I don't really like her that much but it was sad when she was killed. She became more popular in death and her death made Worf more popular.

Jadzia Dax from Star Trek Deep Space Nine
Even though her memories lived on through Ezri Dax it's still sad.

Trip Tucker from Star Trek Enterprise
He deserved better.

Dinobot from Beast Wars Transformers
A true and noble warrior to the end.

Ashley from Coronation Street
I'm not a fan of the show but I tuned in for the whole tram crash saga. This guy has been on the show for years and it's a shame that he died. They should have just killed the bad people like that girl who wanted money from her sister who was married to Steve McDonald.

Kenny from South Park
I know what your thinking. He dies all the time. But in the episode "Kenny Dies", Kenny is suffering from a terminal illness and everyone around him is upset, especially Stan. The scene where he runs to see Kenny at the end and sees the empty bed is very sad. When Stan asks Kyle if Kenny said anything before he died, Kyle say that Kenny asked "Where's Stan?". Of course by the end of season 6 Kenny comes back and the guys just say "Oh hey Kenny".

Grandad from Only Fools and Horses
In real life actor Leonard Piere died before this episode was made. What really caught my attention was what Del said to Rodney about not even starting to mourn yet. To be honest I don't think I have ever seen Del cry. There was the episode where Cassandra had a miscarriage and Del told Rodney to be brave and not cry and stuff but when they go to her room Del starts crying in the most hilarious way.

a real death of a real person in the real world- in 1975, i was watching john chancellor on the nbc nightly news, talk about an elderly japanese lady who died alone in her apartment, and found taped to her tv set was a note she wrote "to her only friend" [the tv set].

Well, I think that usually if someone dies on a show I like, I tend to opt out after that and make an effort not to think about it, because I really don't remember many... But I do have this one. It's from Galaxy Express 999. I prefer the movie version but I think this is the series because of the way the plot runs in it. You might wonder what on earth the song has to do with the pictures, well, the song (which is a favorite of mine) is from another series done later about the same characters. What's happening is that the mom and kid are wandering across the property of a very rich dude, who happens to be a robot and who hunts humans for sport. That's right, after he offs her, he's saying how good she's going to look on his wall, and also right, her son does indeed go in and blow them all away and torch the place. The blond lady has come to help him for some reason.

How about Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop and

Rita from Dexter?

I actually never cared for Rita and was glad they found a way to take her out of the show, but I feel it should be mentioned.

I couldn't believe it! I was thinking, 'NO WAY can they kill Ashley!' but apparently... yes... yes they can... I personally would have preferred Becky's sister to have been killed...

That brought a tear to my eye as well! It was hilarious though that he just reappears at the end. Apparently they were bored with Kenny and decided to kill him off for good but so many people complained that they re-wrote him back in... South Park style.

I can't remember who said Chef from SP, but even if he hadn't left for Scientology reasons, he died shortly after in real life anyway so he definately won't be coming back.

The TV death which got to me the most was Vera from Corrie... She'd been in it for so long :'( Sadly the actress is suffering from smoke related lung illness and can barely walk without pain so she had to leave. Still sad though.

Oh, wait... I forgot one, but there's a lot more to it. This has got to be the saddest, or close to it, ever on tv, because it was done due to the murder of the actor who played the character.

Bill McNeal on NewsRadio. Dave Foley's eulogy or speech or whatever it was is so hard to watch. The man cries and that's hard to see anyway, plus it was Dave Foley crying, plus it was because this friend of his had not only died but been murdered... by his own wife. I mean, dude... Gives me chills thinking about it. I get a little sad every time I see video of Phil Hartman now, and that sucks, because that's the opposite of what I'm supposed to be feeling when I see him...

This trumps what would have been my first pick (if I had remembered it, they're all coming back to me now) which was Henry Blake on M*A*S*H. They didn't tell anyone they were going to do it, so even though he wasn't a real person, they all got weepy when they heard it because everyone liked "Henry".

Really? I didn't find that nearly as sad as what happened with Connor. I fought Fred's death frustrating because I really didn't like that demon character she morphed into, or that whole storyline. It was like with Cordy's leaving--it just seemed like they were rushing to end the series.

With the other deaths, their souls still existed somewhere.

Fred's soul was destroyed.

Renee in 24...while Jack and Renee were making love...a gunman was setting up at the building across the street. You knew it was going to happen, because it wasn't going to be Jack that died. Jack rushed her to the hospital and you knew she wasn't going to make it.

Seemed like the death was more for "shock value" like "Oh unlike other TV shows we aren't afraid to kill important characters." Some say it was to get Jack motivated and back into the game, but they could motivated him another way.

Every important character in The X-Files... they nailed almost everyone through that series (Mulders father, Scully's sister, Scully's father, Mr X, Deep Throat, Mulders sister, Well-Manicured Man, Mulders mum, The Lone Gunmen, Alex Krycek... on and on, and on!! !) Frank Blacks wife and daughter on Millennium was unexpected and really sad, I remember it bothering me a lot too.

This goes back a way, but Adric on Doctor Who.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adric

It was the first time (IIRC) in Doctor Who that a companion dies rather than just choosing to stop traveling with the Doctor. Normally when a companion was in danger, the Doctor would arrive in time to save him/her. This time, the Doctor doesn't and even though he can travel in time and space, specific rules that Timelords must follow means the Doctor can't use the TARDIS to have a second shot at saving him.

I had no problem with any of those deaths. Krycek got booted toward the end of Season 8...and he had it coming to him anyway. The Lone Gunmen, it was kind of pointless since there were only a few episodes left...but they went down as heroes.

If they had killed Skinner, i would have had a huge problem. That was my problem with 24...they killed just about every major character except Jack for shock value...David Palmer/Michelle in the same episode...Renee. They overused it and it became predictable and annoying.
