A lot of good ones have been mentioned. I love the Alien Quadrilogy (yes, even Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection), Dune, Angry Red Planet (cheesy, but quite intelligent at the same time, and it's very unique visually), 2001, Enemy Mine, The Last Starfighter, and Titan AE.

I found Hellraiser: Bloodline to be surprisingly awesome. Usually horror sequels set in space are unbearably stupid, but it managed to make it work.

Apollo 13 kicked ass. I watched Explorers a couple of weeks ago; it is dated, but nice movie. Close Encounters of 3rd Kind is a good movie, but not clearly space but first contact. Can't believe I can't think of others because I too enjoy movies about space, especially the desolation and mental effects of it. Alien is still the gold standard in my opinion.

AAArrrrgggg!! !! I HATED that movie!

(That movie was so bad it made my eyeballs stink!)

I was so embarrassed for Chris Tucker...

I don't get the acclaim that this snoozefest gets.

Sunshine, directed by Danny Boyle, with Cillian Murphy in the central role.
Akin to Solaris not just in name, writer Alex Garland 'wrote the film as a "love letter" to psychologically-minded science-fiction'.

They had a CERN physicist as the film's scientific advisor, but the film uses the science to explore the impact of this crucial mission( to re-ignite a dying sun) on the crew. It's mainly about how this plays out in the schisms between personalities, between ship crew and scientists. Murphy's detached alien-like physicist who sits brooding over the 'payload bomb' seems both all-powerful and vulnerable to the vaguaries of ego, fear and human self-interests that play out in the film. Wonderful visuals too, wish i'd seen it at the cinema.

Yes it was. Just like Star Trek, it spawned a couple of movies. The first movie is the only one worth mentioning. Its about the Earth-Mimbari war.

May I suggest Christmas On Mars, which was created by, and stars The Flaming Lips.
