@OP: I'm still confused why people consider this a "religion." Have they run out of lunatic ideas from other religions, and started making up their own?

I consider it to be a cult because of the way they control and manipulate their adherents. Their current leader, David Miscavige, has been known to be violent on numerous occasions.

They only wanted to be considered a "religion" to avoid having to pay taxes.

Oh God no. I could come up with a better science fiction story than what is called Scientology. Halo, the video game, is a better science fiction story...

The only Scientologist I've seen in person justified that you really do not need a religion to be sane or exist...the scariest looking person I have EVER seen. You could smell the brainwash.

to me thats a big plot hole in the story after the destruction of both death stars there was like 100,000 storm troopers that died. i know about the whole clone thing but surely there are a fraction of them that are regular people that joined up

Even though it is clearly a cult, some people consider it a religion, because they are afraid to criticize any belief system other than Christianity, out of fear of being called a bigot.
