Black may not be a color according to scientists, but for the purposes of this discussion, it is.

Black is absence of light, white is presence of light. So they aren't colors. They deal with the amount of light in a color.

I wear black and gothic clothing.

I'm just naturally attracted to that kind of clothing.

I had just got back from clothes shopping and realised the whole trip took me 20 mins to buy three items of clothing that were all black. So I wondered about other people who wear black clothes and why.

An "I don't wear clothes." option would have been cool but there wasn't room and the "...because I am the prince of darkness." option had to stay because it tickles my dark sense of humour.

Yeah, I only wanted to know about reasons people wear black clothes. Even then I couldn't think of many so I just threw in the "...for some other reason" option.

Starling

I nearly understood that until you got to the bit about the amount of light.

I guess you didn't mean brightness of the light?

So saying black is not a colour because it is the absence of light is like saying zero is not a number because it doesn't amount to anything.

Or assuming the only valid definition of colour is a physicists' one. You're not going to do so well in a paint shop.

So I'd agree with the statement there is no "black light" but wouldn't it be cool, to switch on a "light" and have everything go dark? But this only uses black as an adjective to describe light. Where as you can use "black" as an adjective to describe the colour of objects like a car, a rock, a road, paper. "Colour" is not directly equivalent to "light" (visible electromagnetic radiation).

And there is my pedantic language lesson for the day.

Mr Mark,
I don't wear shirts like that because if I did, some prick would chuck a bucket of cold water at me just to look, and if I went to lunch at an italian restaurant, I'd get red splatters all down the front and feel mortified.

I think we need to distinguish between light and the chemicals that reflect or absorb it's different components.
Dark is simply a lack of light as was stated. Darkness is percieved as black while an abundance of R, G and B (red, green and blue) are percieved as white. there are materials that absorb R,G and B and black is percieved. There are materials that reflect R,G and B and white is percieved.

The confusion is that we are refering to two different things, the actual light and the materials that manipulate it to create the perception. The question is: do colours name the light wavelengths or the perceptions of light or lack there of? If we name the wavelengths of light then there is white light but white is not a colour and black is not a colour. If we name the perceptions then white and black are colours like the rest. I hope I make sense :?

 Yeah, I eat my Italian food at home and shirtless because I can just wipe it off the front of me. Bleach won't always get tomato sauce completely out of white cotton the first time. Spray'n'Wash helps, but skin cleans up so easy it makes me feel like clothes are kinda stupid.

8O Thanks for totally ruining all Italian food for me. To be honest though, I wouldn't mind trying this with a cross-your-heart bra to tuck the napkin into. :P

i wear black, but not very much... maybe a black shirt or black accesories once in a while. i only own one pair of black pants and i rarely wear them.

i wear really bright colors. i guess it goes well with my personality because i'm a very happy person. plus i have dark hair and pale skin so people may assume i'm trying to be goth, which i'm not. i do love goth clothes but they're not for me.

Prince of Darkness was the one that most fit.

I wear mostly black because I like the color.

Yay, we have one prince of darkness and two goths. I was beginning to think those categories were a little under-represented
