Guys, I hate to break this to you but Sheldon is not real, he is actually a praying mantis shoved into retro shirts and left to his own devices.

My sister says I'm like Sheldon and she means it in a good way. Haven't seen the show yet, though.

Hmm... I wouldn't be surprised if the creator has ADHD or which ever one.

I don't identify with Sheldon. I'm autistic and not a nerd/dork/whatever which is totally different.

Because it's exaggerating a disability for comedy. And it does a terrible job of it.

The writers have been asked if Sheldon were supposed to have AS, and they said no. The character is based on somebody one of the writers knew when he was younger.

Well then they should track down the guy it was based on, have him diagnosed and apologize immediately to the entire AS community and turn Sheldon into Barny from How I Met Your Mother!

I think it is important to note that no sitcom would ever be funny without someone who is not borderline psychotic, or basically a sociopath.

You have Barney Stinson in HIMYM and Chandler in Friends, why not have a super nerd who has AS qualities?

My history teacher compared me to Sheldon long before I got diagnosed. I suppose my Aspieness shows. XD

Anyway, I like Sheldon. I don't think he's offensive because that's the way that some people with autism are. I'm not saying that that's the way that all people with autism are, because that's not true. But some people are kind of like Sheldon. Like myself.

I love sheldon. He's so cute. I've been told i'm like him. I was a bit annoyed coz I think i've mellowed over the years... Maybe I haven't after all

If the depiction of sheldon's aspergers is not accurate then why do so many people jump to the diagnosis of aspergers, especially as the writers say that he is not an aspie. They must have got something correct in their portrayal of AS or no one would think he was an aspie.

If you think he's an exaggeration you obviously haven't read the "why are nts so offended" thread that was just below this on the board when I clicked in.

I want to comment on your avatar, not your post. My youngest daughter was in the kitchen frying the bacon for the devilled eggs on Thanksgiving when she told me that she really wished she had bunny ears, so she could express herself better.

Your avatar has bunny ears.

We talked about it for a while, as that is something I tend to do. Probe questions until the person gives up and is p*ssed off at me, but usually my family just answers honestly. Answering honestly s what I want to hear. They know this about me and are fine with it. It's just "how Mom is"

She doesn't want a dog or cat tail to show feelings because they don't show enough feeling for her. She said a bunny's ears show more feelings. I don't know why, but then I don't interact with the bunny all that much. She does. I interact more with the dogs.

Since your avatar has bunny ears, is that why you picked her? Do you think bunny ears can show more feelings than facial expression or words? She does. I'm just asking.

I just think of him as a funny nerdy character. I like him. He has a lot of exaggerated qualities, but everyone has their quirks, so I bet there are people in the world that do identify with some things that seem overly exaggerated. Also I never thought of him as someone who was based on a person with AS, he was always just a character with a certain personality. It doesn't seem offensive to me and if he was real, I'd like him.

It's cool that people can relate to him. I find it an offensively unfunny show.

The creators cannot give Sheldon an official diagnosis of AS because the concept of his friends 'making fun' of him and giving him a hard time is no longer funny when someone has a mental disorder, it's seen as cruel.
Personally, I see Sheldon as a little over the top and let's be honest, he is just as rude and obnoxious to his friends, as they are to him (albeit, unwittingly). Let's face it, he makes that show and if it wasn't for him it probably wouldn't exist, he has become a poster child for AS and the viewing public love him and I think it puts a human face to AS and so I feel it's a good thing.
