My first watched and favourite is Laputa, Castle In The Sky. Howl's Moving Castle is great too.

I really hated that two-faced monster in Spirited Away, though it's a good film. I think it's a bit eerie for kids.

I just love Ma Pirate & her boys in Laputa :)

Yeah, Ma Dola and her boys are really funny. I especially love the scene where all the boys are trying to impress Sheeta and come to help her in the kitchen. The only ghibli "villains" that are funnier than the Dola gang is Mama Aiuto in Porco Rosso. I love how everything that the Mama Aiuto gang attempts fails epically.

I agree! I don't know why Laputa doesn't get mentioned more often. I ought to watch Porco Rosso.

I'd definitly suggest watching Porco Rosso. It's hilarous

I'm a great fan of Ghibli, I got all the films of Miyazaki on DVD. (To the exception of Ponyo that I got on my computer.) My favourites are Castle in the sky and Princess Mononoke.

@Heidi80: Do you know the Heidi girl of tha alps anime? It was been directed by Takahata.

Yeah, I watched the Heidi anime on a german children's channel in 1999, two years before I watched Princess Mononoke and knew anything about Ghibli. I was studying german and watched loads of children's show in german, but Heidi was my favourite

I hope it's okay if I bump this?

Just wanted to say that I love Studio Ghibli. The moveis are so beatifeull, filled with emotion and passion. I love the soundtrack, Joe Hisaishi is a horribly underrated composer, he has written some amazing stuff. But of course, everything about the movies is simply brilliant.

Castle in the Sky. Best Studio Ghibli movie ever.

Who else loves Studio Ghibli? What's your favourite Ghibli movie? And why do so many people wit asperger love Studio Ghibli (or is it just here in Finland that aspies love Ghibli)?

I've just discovered Studio Ghibli... actually I've just discovered anime in general... I never paid much attention to it because I thought it was all just weird creatures and sci-fi type stuff (never appealed to me much)
Anyway... I watched Whisper of the Heart the other day and absolutely fell in love with it.
I have also been watching some non-ghibli stuff too (Wandering Son, 5 Centimeters per Second, etc) and am amazed by how quickly I become drawn into the emotions of the characters.
I think most aspies tend to be more child-like when it comes to our emotions and since the protagonists are mostly children maybe that is why we like them so much??
I know I feel like I can relate better (emotionally at least) to middle school students than to people my own age (I am 33)
Anyone else agree or disagree?

The only one I have seen so far was Ponyo. Becuase it was cute and adorable.
The next one I plan to check out was Arietty, but I didn't have time to get to it.

Spirited Away has a dragon. Nuff said.

Although I also liked Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, Kiki's Delivery Service, and others. The steam punk/fantasy and the fair to good plots make these films very entertaining. Can't wait for the next one this summer.

I have loved SG films back when they did the film The Last Unicorn when I was a little girl, back before they became Studio Ghibli. They were Top Craft back then, in the early 70/80s (wow, I am showing my age here lol).

Laputa: Castle in the Sky is one of my most favourite Studio Ghibli movies. Spirited Away comes a close second (mostly because of Joe Hisashi's wonderful, wonderful music - I own the soundtrack) as well as Porco Rosso (Miyazaki confirmed he's writing a sequel). I can't say I got into Nauiscca: Valley of the Wind nor My Neighbour Totoro though. And Princess Mononoke bored me to be honest.

Howl's Moving Castle was okay but you could tell there were production problems by how jarring and disjointed the storytelling were (indeed, unless you had keen ears near the very start of the movie, you'd be nonplussed as to who Turniphead turned out to be); I heard Diane Wynne Jones wasn't impressed (I grew up reading her novels). Same with Ursula T. Guin with the adaptation of Tales of the Earthsea (very loosely adapted from the first half of the first novel of her Dragons of Perth series)...

That said, Studio Ghibli are definitely one of my favourite Japanese animation studios and they do some seriously fantastic work. I'm glad GKids picked up the slack for dubbing and licensing their future movies; I'm really curious to see When the Wind Rises since it's been ages Studio Ghibli produced something not based on a pre-existing book and from what I heard, Miyazaki penned the story himself.
