I haven't seen much anime, as most of the stuff I see I download over my slow-ish internet connection. Some of the stuff I like though includes

Neon Genesis Evangelion (the first anime I saw, and also my favourite)
Cowboy Bebop
Key The Metal Idol
Last Exile (2/3s in, good so far but I'm thinking the ending is going to be rushed)
Love Hina
Serial Experiments Lain
A bunch of stuff by Miyazaki, although I really only like Princess Mononoke and Laputa
Grave of the Fireflies (excellent film that everyone should see, including those that don't like anime)
Only Yesterday

There's also a lot of popular anime I don't like at all, like Ghost in the Shell and Metropolis.

Recently I've started reading manga instead, since it's so much easier to download. So far I've read Chobits and am a little bit through Kare Kano.

"Grave of the Fireflies" makes me cry EVERY time.

It's a story that would have worked really well even as a live action movie -- not your "typical" type of anime story at all.

Also, pretty much anything from Studio Ghibli is always great. And yes, FF7: Last Order was pretty cool too.

The stranger the better? What precisely would you define as strange? Would that be a surrealist interpretation with regards to visual art or plot?

I liked anime even before I knew what it was called. As a kid I was a huge fan of Battle of the Planets, then in the 80s there was Voltron and especially Robotech, which is one of my favourites. I watched a lot of anime in university, and my favourites were Ranma, Macross Plus, and (of course) anything by Studio Ghibli. I don't watch it a lot anymore, though. Probably because there aren't any anime fan clubs around here.

Both really. But, I suppose that surreal is probably the better word here.

I can appreciate a lot of things, but I find that mostly I am drawn to the strange.

But I think part of it is that the the surreal series also tend to have more meaning. You start to question the meaning behind everything. Which is good! Why did the Artist decide to do this, instead of that sort of things.
