Yes, in the book, when Faramir learned how Boromir had died, he was tempted by the Ring's power, but intelligent and strong-willed enough to choose not to touch it (he also recalled that it had led to the end of the Kings of Numenor). In order to bring that across in the movie, I think it would have required even more exposition than they already had, so I can see using the method they used to shortcut it. (Besides, it gave Sam another cool speech...) :)

About the biggest change was the removal of the sequence involving Tom Bombadil, who controlled the forest just east of the Shire, but since the novel had that mostly as a sort of story buffer between the Shire of The Hobbit (which Tolkien had originally created as a series of bedtime tales for his son) and the more grimdark world of LOTR, it wasn't really necessary in the movie - and would have taken up valuable screen time.

Let's be honest...did anyone really miss Tom Bombadil? As far as I'm concerned, that guy is the single scariest thing Tolkien ever managed to conjure up (no pun intended).

Oh, and they took out the Scouring of the Shire, but since people were already complaining about how many endings there were in The Return of the King, I suppose it's just as well.

Yeah, I initially didn't understand why that was cut out, but then I looked at the run time for The Return of the King...suddenly, everything became clear.

I read the book because I felt like it was something I had to do, and I didn't enjoy it that much. Honestly, the parts which were changed for the movies are almost exactly the parts that I thought were silly. Tom Bombadil, Saruman in the Shire, etc. I think the movies ended up much more focused and interesting than the book.

In fact, my least favourite part of the movies is straight from the book, and I guess nobody had the guts to change it - the weird and super-long ending. It would be a much more satisfying ending for Frodo and Sam to die at Mt Doom after destroying the ring.

I enjoyed the movies a great deal, gave me some sense of the scale of middle earth. That said I can't help but think the books are even more wonderful. Don't like nit picking but some of the language is lost in the film.. Not knocking em though. I haven't readthat many books, certainly not compared to some folks, but I didn't regret the time spent with this one.

I'm not related to German and Anglo-Saxon world and old traditions, so I feel a bit unmoved when I read about some characters of the books (the elves), but I admire him a lot. He created a captivating story with a lot of subplots, a believable world, beautiful languages and mythical characters. He has not been beated yet and it will be difficult. He has been the last big storyteller. And I'm being epic because he deserves it :o

May or may not be relevant, but I found the audio books on youtube a few Weeks ago. Could be an enjoyable alternative to reading maybe. They might've been taken down by now but I'm sure there are more copies elsewhere online.. Or one could buy it even.

Anyways
