I think even the movie's defenders will admit, it still can't hold a candle to the original Alien, which it's supposed to explain the origins of. But then again, few movies can hold a candle to Alien, including it's sequels.

Alien is my favorite film and so I am concerned about watching Promethues because I think it might ruin the Alien film for me. One big problem I have is this idea that the events of Promethues occur about 30 years before the events in Alien! That would piss me off because what I loved in Alien was the notion that the space jockey and the alien ship were possibly thousands or even millions of ears old when Dallas, Kane, and Lambert found it.
Not to give anything away, but - yes and no.

Yes and no? It ruins alien or does not ruin alien?
I think he means yes to the events of Prometheus taking place years before the events of Alien, and no to the alien ship being hundreds of years old when Dallas, Kane and Lambert found it.
You got my meaning correctly.

Well in that case Alien is ruined for me so I will not watch Promethues
Sorry. But regardless, don't be afraid to give it a chance.

I picked up the Prometheus CE at Costco this weekend. There is a Bonus Feature Blu-Ray with it that has a 4 hour "Making of" Feature. It gives alot of insight into the developement of the story. A little bit more detail about some of the characters/actors and, most importantly, a section where Ridley Scott and the Editor "defend" thier theatrical release cut. This indicates to me that they now know it was a problem.
However even better then that on the Blu-Ray movie disk is a bunch of the scenes they cut from the original release. These scenes have information that will fill in a few of the blanks left in the movie. Unfortunately you cannot watch them inbedded into the theatrical version of the move but, if I know Ridely Scott there will probably be a Director cut. Though we may have to wait a few years for it. This version was released to be in time for Oscar voting. There is still alot of stuff in this movie that is worth atleast an Oscar nomination.
So I recomend watching the movie and, if possible the deleted scenes. The "Making of" feature is just gravy for us real Sci-fi nerds.

I'm not saying you ruined it for me, Ridley Scott has. Maybe I will get it for a christmas present.
