I found A Clockwork Orange and Requiem for a Dream to be most disturbing.

I found The Exorcist to be both scary and disturbing. Same thing with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the other movies in that franchise.

I know what you mean. The movie presented anti war activists as terrorists who should be killed. And they were killed, in increasingly grotesque ways.

Matt and Trey are Jerks, with no respect or class. Most of the subjects of their dehumanisation campaigns have done nothing to deserve it other than being Democratic supporters. It surprises me that more people don't call them out on it.

I watched that movie when it first ran on TV, when I was a kid. I remember how all my classmates were all as spooked by it as I was.

Wolf Creek is the only movie I've seen that made me so uncomfortable that I had to switch off / walk away. The performances of the cast really were tremendous - maybe too good. The depiction of depravity and suffering was a bit too convincing for my liking.

Hostel was another one that made my skin crawl...

then there is-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Distance_Call
what the two episodes I mentioned have in common, is that both were videotapes with early quad videotape recorder, as opposed to the usual 35mm monochrome film the remaining episodes were shot. the video gave the shows an extra eerie presence and liveness that the filmed episodes lacked.

I wished they had put in the ghostly voice of the deceased grandmother. this episode was based on anecdotes about people who have been the recipient of such calls in real life.

There are people who claim to have spoken to the dead by phone?
I've written a story where a character speaks to her ex husband's mother, only to learn later that the mother's been dead for years. I didn't know this phenomenon was ever alleged to be true.

there was a retired businessman named George meek who paid beaucoup bucks funding scientific work in communicating with spirits including the invention of "spiricom" which is a telephone-like apparatus meant for spiritual communication. google him, interesting reading and it would better inform your novel.
