I lost all faith in the Oscars when they gave "Crash" best picture over "Brokeback Mountain."
I watch them anyway just to be "entertained."

I thought "Crash" was way better than "Brokeback." People made a big deal about "Brokeback" just because it was about gay guys. I guess it could be because I live in the bay area and have been around homosexuals my entire life, but I didn't find anything special about it. If it had been about a man and a woman having an affair instead then nobody would have made such a big deal. It was sad, but I didn't cry ONCE. It was just too subtle for its own good. "Crash," on the other hand, had me in tears for about fifteen minutes, which is difficult to do, and I very much liked the way it tied the stories together. A tapestry of plot threads isn't as easy to connect as it seems to people who aren't authors.

I've never understood where one gets the opportunity to see those films nominated in the short films and documentary categories. Unless it's a famous one like Al Gore's pic or a film by Michael Moore, they are never shown anywhere. Even on cable. Frankly, those look more interesting than the movies

Another odd thing about the Oscars is that I believe most people who haven't seen any of these films can predict who will win in the major award categories. I am pretty accurate, and I don't believe I have seen more than one film in any given year.
