This is just a remake of a classic, which shouldn't have been made. This one looks very wierd...

Actually, the people who made the new one were very clear that it is not a remake of the original movie, it is a different adaptation of the same book

True enough, but really...the "it was in the book!" defense is starting to get as tiresome as George Lucas defending everything he does with, "The old space operas of the '50s did it!" or whatever. It may have elements of truth, but by now it's not good enough for me. With the Lucas example, it's like, yeah, well, that doesn't make me enjoy Hayden and Natalie sleepwalking through their lines any more, or 30 years of bada**dom going down the toilet with one monosyllabic groan: "NOOOOOOOOOOO!"

I admittedly didn't see this though...but don't plan to, my brother called it "awful." He says Depp's Wonka came off as a soundalike of Dr. Evil from Austin Powers (and in general he looked/sounded...well, I am thinking of an un-PC word that I will not say cause I got too much respect), the Oompa-Loompa songs weren't good (yeah, yeah, "from the book"), that they stuck in a drug reference (something about the grass?) and other gratuitous pop culture nods (and not the clever kinds), and that Grandpa Joe looked too frail. Only things he liked were the squirrel scene (probably cause my sister would hate it ;-)), the British origin of the Buckets (or would that be "Bouquet"...couldn't resist ;-)), and Augustus Gloop.

Things I am leery about: Wonka gets an origin? Yeah, like I said, cause it SO worked for The Grinch. The less said about that, the better! Hey, back in MY day, we had our nutty candy man in the book and the Gene Wilder movie, and he was funny and entertaining, and that was good enough for us! We didn't need to delve deeper to connect with him, darn it! And a nitpick: the girl playing Violet looks too small, not the "beastly girl" I'd imagine from the book, or how she appeared in the Wilder movie. If I can get on my soapbox for a brief moment, it probably wouldn't happen anyway because of the American actress style (a pound over "ideal" weight? Nooooo, you'll never make it!)

Mini-rant over...

J.

That is creepy......

Willy WOnka sexually abuses the children and the oompa loompas!

That site is great...mostly for the Darth Vader parodies (as you could tell from above post, I would appreciate that!)

I loved the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I thought Danny Elfman's music was perfect and the oompa loompas were hilarious. I liked Burton's version because he focused a lot more on the importance of family, too. i agree that the whole willy wonka backstory could have been left out, but it's kinda cute imho. i didnt see the michael jackson likeness... wonka didn't even like the kids at all. i liked that it was quirky/creepy. i rememebr thinking that the book was weird when i read it as a kid. :)

I'm thinking of leaving the site. PaulBs one of the reasons. And I saw the movie and liked it. So did my sister. Wonka wasn't like Michael Jackson. BYE.
