To me, Mr. Bean seems funny only for the first few minutes. And I cannot get why he should be an aspie, he is just odd.

His lack of speech may be intentional, so that the series can be easily sold worldwide.

I used to love him when I was a kid and he stills makes me laugh now but not as much. I much prefer Blackadder.

I laugh every single time he hits the pavement in the intro. It shouldn't be that funny but somehow it is.

My son and I love Mr. Bean and we loved Mr. Bean's Holiday.
Rowan Atkinson played a shy, barely verbal, humor-disabled vicar in Keeping Mum. Very different from Mr. Bean, but Aspie-ish all the same.

I wanted to add that, like a lot of British humor, Mr. Bean's boorish behavior seems to poke fun at "polite" (read NT) society just as much as at himself. I don't think it's all about ridiculing an odd person.

Which all happens to be part of the autism spectrum.

I thought the guy who created him had an autistic brother that he consciously modeled parts of the character on.

I don't mind laughing at my disability or anything, but something about the Mr. Bean series, sometimes it seems like the cruel kind instead of the funny kind. I can't handle watching it. Reminds me a lot of myself, and of laughing at someone rather than with them.

Rowan Atkinson studied electrical engineering at university and I rather suspect that he may have had the opportunity to observe autism amongst his fellow engineers

Haven't seen Mr. Bean in forever, but I used to love it. Like everyone else said, though, the movie wasn't quite as good...still haven't seen the new one.

Stay away from the book Mr. Bean's Diary, though...that thing seriously freaked me out :x Mr. Bean killing terrapins and dogs on purpose, and laughing about it...totally going psycho stalker over some librarian chick 8O There were a few really funny parts, but mostly it was just scary :x :x :x I remember the TV show being a lot more innocent and fun.

I thought that some of Mr Bean was funny. The best one was the time someone stole his instant camera in the park. I loved the way that at the ID parade at the police station he put a litter bin on each persons head and poked them with a ballpoint to hear how the squealed.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

The 1997 film was on tv this afternoon and that prompted me to Google Mr Bean and autism, which led me to this old thread from long before my own time on WP! I still prefer the tv series, though!

My boys think Mr Bean is hilariously funny. My youngest one (6) especially, he even imitates his voice, mannerisms and goose step. Now that I do find hilarious. There are parts that make me LOL too but by and large I love it because my kids get a real kick out of it. I'm more a fan of Billy Connelly, Jimoin, Carl Baron, I used to think the character of Krammer(sp) off Seinfeld was a scream too.

Mr Bean is my personal role model. I have all the episodes and my favourites are probably the park bench/picnic sketch and the Christmas episode.
