Ah! See, I just watched this episode

They don't exactly say how he got the problem - but you get the impression that he was quite athletic and suddenly got this pain in his leg and went to the doctor who, at first, dismissed him as trying to get drugs (he was in so much pain that he grabbed a syringe of demorol (sp?) out of the attending physcian's hand and injected it himself) - then he came back and they said he had an infection from the self injection and gave him antibiotics and bed rest . . . 3 days later he came back and was peeing tea colored urine - which means that there was blood and something else (some chemical name)that means that his kidneys were shutting down . . . so they looked further and found he had an aneurism in his leg (blood clot) that had killed several of the big muscles in his leg - these dead muscles were producing the other chemical that was shutting down his kidneys . . .
SOOOO - this time they admitted him and wanted to amputate his leg - but he talked them into doing a bypass around the clot, though it would be very painful and the chemicals produced when the infected blood went around the clot could cause him to have cardiac arrest - but that is the option he went with . . .
Turns out it was horribly painful and that pain killers could do nothing for him and he ended up dying for 1 minute from the chemicals causing cardiac arrest . . .

All this time, by the way, his girlfriend, Stacey is trying to talk him into getting his leg amputated . . .

So, because the pain is so much he asks to be put in a medically induced coma until the pain subsides (approx. 48 hours - I'm guessing that this is something like when your foot falls asleep and it burns when it wakes up on a grand scale) - which is what they do . . .

Well, turns out Stacey is a lawyer and has power of attorney over him - which means once he is unconsious she gets to make medical decisions - so she decides to get all the dead muscles removed from his leg - which leaves him in chronic pain, unable to walk without a cane, and breaks up their realtionship and makes him totally unable to trust anyone . . .

By the way, this episode is 'Three Stories' and the whole thing is presented very interestingly - you don't find out House is describing himself until about 20 minutes before the end of the show . . . but there are some subtile clues - like the person he presents as the patient before he identifies the patient as himself is always wearing the same clothes as he is . . .

Thank you for that beautiful spoiler...

Considering we only just got House a few months ago, we're not up to that episode... which is now ruined for me.

Again, thanks...
