I thought Bloodsucking Freaks was horrible by itself, but certainly worth watching to claim you bore witness to it. The same might be said of I Spit on Your Grave, except I haven't actually seen that yet.
My favorite cult horror movies are the Evil Dead films, especially the second one, and the first two zombie films of George A. Romero, especially Dawn of the Dead. Dead Alive and Re-Animator are also highly recomended.
My mother always thought BSF was a real snuff film, in particular the famous brain scene. I dunno, I find alot of horror films to be funny. Sometimes disturbing though. I Spit On Your Grave is out on DVD here, so it's a good chance you can get it in the US.
Evil Dead trilogy rocks, but I think that's like a given on every cult horror film list. The movies of Bava, Castle, Carpenter, Argento and David Cronenberg are always there too.
Others good ones:
The Golem
Cube
Halloween
Nosferatu
A Chinese Ghost Story
The Exorcist
M
A Nightmare On Elm Street
Hellraiser
Rosemary's Baby
The Thing
There's heaps more but I'll limit myself for now
