There's a character on Grange Hill (a teen soap opera on British TV) who has AS. He is one of the few characters who don't skive off school, bully people, insult the teachers or vandalize things, so that's nice, but he's a bit of a pushover and people often get the better of him ...

I've never watched House :?

My knowledge of TV shows and TV characters can't even be considered to be at a basic level. However, according to Wikipedia, the following TV shows or films have also had Aspie characters:

Magnificent Seven
Mozart and the Whale
Dr. Phil

While we're talking about Goren...I know this thread's about TV, not movies...but Vincent D'Onofrio is still first and foremost Private Leonard Pyle in my mind. And unflattering as it seems, it's not hard to think of Pyle as an Aspie. Despite his poor social skills and his difficulty adjusting to army discipline he had an obvious obsession, and he clearly, not to mention tragically, excelled at it. If he was an Aspie then Full Metal Jacket would be a cautionary tale about dehumanising talented people to fit into rigid roles and categories...[/quote]

And while we're talking about people with AS and guns... 8O 8O ...I recall someone once saying they thought Moe was the closest character to an autistic on the Simpsons. He can't hold a relationship, doesn't seem overly close to any of his friends...and will pull a shotgun on his best customers if they try to steal a drink. Someone else's words not mine!!

Dr Martin Dear – House Officer from Channel 4 comedy Green Wing
(extract from Green Wing official website)
Bumbling and innocent, Martin failed his exams for a second time and remains the target of Guy’s ‘wit’. He spent most of the first series working up the courage to ask Caroline out, before blowing it by trying to play hard-to-get after buying her for £3000 in the slave auction. Ever impressionable, he was once convinced by Mac and Guy to drink some of Guy’s urine in an attempt to harness his pulling powers.

I watch primetime television on a regular basis, and I know quite a variety of different shows. Telling whether or not someone may have AS traits is not entirely easy, but I guess I could give it a try.

I think that Dr. House clearly has some sort of emotional or personality disturbance, but I don't really think he has too many AS traits. And he speaks in way too many metaphors that I sometimes have trouble understanding myself without really thinking about it. Most AS people are way more serious in their discussions and tend to recite things as if from an encyclopedia, like they know it all or something. I think others may speak in a more flat or monotone effect due to social pressure, but their intelligence would have to be high.

Someone mentioned Dr. Reid from Criminal Minds. Good choice, maybe even the best. William Peterson from CSI is another really good choice, I think.

At times, I wonder if Abby from NCIS may have traits, but I think her social skills are way too involved.

And then there was David Duchovny from the X-Files, whom I suspect had AS traits.

Someone mentioned Chloe from 24, and that is probably a good choice as well.

I think, however, someone missed a pretty interesting example: Michael Scofield from Prison Break, whom on the show is said to have "low latent inhibition," which means he's unable to block out incoming stimuli. This, combined with a high IQ, makes him something of a genius. However, there's a sort of problem with him, but I don't know if it's related to AS or not. He had tattooed on his skin a map of the prison corridors and what not hidden within a wide range of figures and formations, such that nobody else but him could decode it. I don't know about many people with AS, but here's the thing.

I once took an IQ test and scored a bit above average, though I forget the number off hand. I have the ability to memorize large sets of numbers, and I memorized and recited something like 20 non-sequential numbers backwards, which sort of astonished the person giving the test. However, there was a part of the test that involved seeing images hidden within a picture. I could not do this for any picture shown. All I could see was the actual picture. However, if I drew the image within the picture, I probably would be able to recall it.

Larry David from "curb your enthusiasm" is a good choice... I don't know if I'd say moe the bartender, I just think he's a generally pissed off person. If you analyzed all the simpsons characters, many of them are candidates for various personality disorders etc or could have AS traits, but I don't think I could pigeonhole any one character as having as. And Gil Grissom from CSI.

Definitely Brennan and her assistant Zack from Bones, but those are the only ones I can think of offhand. Zack might as well have a neon "aspie" sign hanging around his neck. xD

What about Big Keith from The Office (British sitcom if anyone hasnt heard of it in the US)? Saying that you probably have as it won two Golden Globes. Anyway, I think he displays a few AS traits, for example his droning, monotone voice which does not give away any clues as to the emotions he's feeling. This was illustrated best IMO when he recorded a really boring voiceover message for the answering machine. There's also his inability to conduct small talk, he does try, but is not very efficient at it.

Example:
Goes to sit next to Dawn the receptionist in the staff room to have lunch. Dawn is reading a magazine.
Keith: (finally breaking the silence) What you reading?
Dawn: It's a holiday brochure.
Keith: (long pause again, and he is thinking of what to say) So...er...are you thinking of going on holiday this year?
Dawn: (patronisingly) Er...yeah.
Keith: (again a long pause as he tries to muster a response) So where are you going?
Dawn: The States.
Keith: (nods his head). (About ten seconds later) Is that...the United States?

Oh, and there's another one where Gareth and Tim (two employees) are introducing themselves to a new employee, Rachel. There doing all the "Hi, I'm Tim, nice to meet you" crap, and Keith is also standing there and has not said a single word. Suddenly, he rudely interrupts and shouts "KEITH" in a loud voice which is inappopriate in the situation and offers to shake Rachel's hand.

I know this was an old thread, but it was relevant. My son and I love Criminal Minds, never miss an episode. He's 11 and I won't let him post alone yet, so agreed to post with/for him on this one :D

If you ask me/us, Dr. Reid is an AS poster boy. It seems each week in the beginning they actually went to pains to incorporate something from the "official" diagnosis code in order to prove their point, many times quietly and smartly, sometimes not so much (like when the rogue FBI agent who had the twin girl kidnapped talked about Gideon not seeing his coworker's "autistic traits"). I just thought that one went too far. However, showing Reid's discomfort with social experiences was usually handled very well, and my son really identified with the time he just had to decompress and sat indian style on his desk chair and *spinned* around.

In addition to that, it is just a good show. It has also helped push my son's interests away from trains and dinosaurs and he's now in a forensics class at the local university. I think Dr. Reid is a good "mentor" of sorts. For us anyway it helped my son see that AS is just a different way, not a loss of a way altogether.

yay! criminal minds. yay.

Interesting that Law and order:CI should be mentioned because they once had an aspie as a criminal.

Yes. It made me quietly furious, especially since GOREN has precious little room to talk!
