"Werckmeister Harmonies" by Bela Tarr: No where near as bad as "Damnation" by the same director. Long slow and boring. just how I like them. This film runs 2 hours and 20 minutes and only has 39 shots. Each take goes on and on and on. The story seems to center around the growing paranoia of a small Hungarian town when a traveling museum comes with a stuffed whale in tow. I'll probably have to watch it again to get a better sense of what it was about. It's not a film I would recommend unless you have been secretly hoping that Andrei Tarkovsky would direct a version of a Kafka story, but without his usually fast paced, action packed style. :D

"The New World" (Extended version TRT: 2:50) by Terrence Malick: I liked this film a lot. It has the usual beautiful photography you'd expect from a Malick film and the usual slow pace with meditative voice overs. The film uses the story of John Smith and Pocahontas and the attempts by settlers to establish a colony at Jamestown as the skeleton to build a story about the complexity of love and loyalty. I liked the fact that, while the ending is a happy one, it goes off in a direction I was not expecting and says something about different kinds of love.

THOR

Very fun to watch. It's an action movie meets a fish-out-of-water comedy.

Priest

Another excellent action movie. I think I liked it better than Thor. Definitely darker, more dramatic.

Youtube: Miracle Worker (2000)
Netflix stream: Letters to God

Letters to God was very awesome! I was surprised that it was based on a true story. Pretty cool.

I just saw -The Conspirator-. 4.5 out of 5. Excellent historically based motion picture.

Bicentennial Man (1999)

Great movie. Made me really think about the purpose of my life and what I can do to improve as a human being

A great classic indeed.

Source Code. I didn't like it at all. The initial premise was broken, the ending didn't follow the rules it set up for itself and the moral of the story was trite. Utter garbage compared to the far superior Moon. Also had one of the worst performances of the year from Jeffrey Wright, who hammed it up as an 'evil' moustache twirling scientist.

just watched Dance of the Dead on netflicks.

I was cool to see all the high school cliques represented and interacting with one another to survive. President of Student Council, badass redneck, dudes in a band, cheerleader, sci fi club etc banding together to avoid being eaten!

"The Illusionist" by Sylvain Chomet (IMDB Link: Imdb: The Illusionist) Chomet's previous film was "The Triplets of Bellville" is fairly light and funny. The Illusionist, based on a script by Jacques Tati is a melancholy, almost depressing film. It follows a character, essentially an animated Jacques Tati as an aging magician who performs to increasingly smaller audiences. A needy young girl looking to escape her boring home life follows him and he must take care of her as he travels to various towns doing his act. There isn't a strong story line. It's really about little character details and visual gags. I recommend it, but only for those who prefer off beat animation.

I also watched "Some Like It Hot" recently. It's been a while since I've seen this film. I generally don't like Billy Wilder's sex comedies. "The Apartment" is very good but it doesn't go in for the tacky jokes that "Some Like it Hot" and "Irma La Douce" have. I guess I liked "Some Like It Hot" a bit better this time, but I still think his earlier films are much better.
