I care a lot. It was very irritating and depressing.

Annihilation

What did you think of it?
You asked AnonymousAnonymous so I hope he sees your question and shares his opinion.

But, in the mean time, I hope folk will not mind too much if I offer my opinion: Annihilation, is a wonderful, eerie, science fiction horror. I really like it a lot. Much of the movie makes you feel uneasy...delightfully so! It is also a visual treat. And, interestingly, it casually pulverizes the Bechdel Test without seeming to care--but I'm not sure it would pass the Reverse Bechdel Test!

I think anyone (17 or older) curious about seeing a visual, eerie, Science-Fiction horror should consider seeing it! :thumright:

I agree it was a really enjoyable movie. And yes visually and hauntingly beautiful! Especially the scene with the people shaped trees. Probably my favorite scene.

Spoiler: kind of:

It kind of reminded me of a dark version of Hayao Miyazaki. The strong female leads. And the way strong will power and a complete sense of self staved off the transformation longer. In Miyazaki stories the characters are able to overcome curses etc when they are confident in who they are and their own abilities and refuse to give in.

It had a strong Lovecraftian vibe to it in a way similar to At the Mountains of Madness. In some scenes in "The Shimmer", it's obvious that the characters may not know if they are going crazy or not in part because where they go into may actually be real and not some made-up place.

Natalie Portman was excellent as always and I also recommend this film! :D

I deliberately did not mention Lovecraft but I'm glad you did. I've not been a Lovecraft reader so I didn't realize that about Annihilation until we saw Color Out of Space which is explicitly based on a Lovecraft story--and has a very similar story, just moved from Science Fiction Horror to Fantasy Horror.

I prefer Science Fiction to Fantasy so I'd lean toward Annihilation out of the two. But both were good movies. Both had that eerie feel. Both have since been added to our collection.

P.S. Sigh. Color Out of Space is the second-to-last film we've seen in a movie theater. We saw it there in late January 2020--about one month before everything became an eerie Horror story.

I took the grandkids to the movie theater and saw "Raya and the Last Dragon".

A good Disney flick.

Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Living proof that art - even in the movie industry - should be left solely to the artists, not studio executives who are only interested in the financial bottom line. The uncut, four hour version, which includes appearances by Darkside, Martian Manhunter, and the Joker, was a far superior product than the the theatrical release, and could have simply been cut into two theatrical releases, but alas, the studio executive Philistines decided they had a better idea of cutting the film down to the bare bones.
Or in other words, the director's cut kicked a$$!

The animation was quite good. This film was created during lockdown where most of the creators were coordinating through teleconference at home. So its origins were rather different than most films.
