I remember when I first read about SuckerPunch on the Internet. I thought, "Wow, women using their imaginations to overcome life obstacles? That sounds like the perfect story for me!"
And then the trailer came out. I was so disappointed. Whereas I had expected a dark Burtonesque fantasy world about the empowerment of its female characters (in other words, something along the lines of the recent Alice in Wonderland), what I got instead was women running around in skimpy outfits blowing stuff up. I'm not necessarily a feminist, but it actually looked degrading to women, like the people who made the movie just sat around thinking "How can we cram everything guys like into one movie? I know! Let's show a ton of cleavage and explosions!"
But - and this is a huge "but" - I gleaned all of this just from a trailer. I haven't actually seen the movie yet. When it comes to entertainment, I am a very open-minded person. I am willing to watch any movie once. Right now there are other movies on my "Must Watch" list that are of higher priority to me (including Raiders of the Lost Ark and Goldeneye), but I have decided that I am willing to give SuckerPunch a shot.
After all, nothing makes me happier than when I have low expectations for a movie and get pleasantly surprised by how much I wind up loving it.
