All Quiet on the Western Front
My local theatre was playing it before it goes to netflix. Lots of people came out to see it.
Very good film. Powerful. I think it should win some Oscars.

The Hawk (1993)

You can't go wrong with a Helen Mirren film, right? Wrong, this BBC TV movie is an absolute clunker. Helen's character Anne, a former psychiatric patient, begins to suspect her husband is the local serial killer, but it turns out that he can't be, then she stabs him to death, then it turns out he was the said killer after all, and Anne is the toast of the town.....yawn. Sounds thrilling, but believe me, it ain't.

Apparently 'inspired' to some degree by the case of Peter Sutcliffe, the so-called 'Yorkshire Ripper', one of the two most notorious British serial killers of the 1970s and 80s (the other being Dennis Nilsen).

Last night we watched two movies:

The Mummy [1932]
<=>"It comes to life!"

A very good horror movie...and Boris Karloff did a wonderful job!

IMDb notes that Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man had literary antecedents but The Mummy didn't. It was inspired by the discovery of Pharaoh Tutankahmen's tomb and the alleged curse it contained.

It also quotes Boris Karloff as saying to the make-up artist:
<=+=>"Well, you've done a wonderful job, but you forgot to give me a fly!"

Soul [2020]
<=>"Everybody has a soul. Joe Gardner is about to find his."

Excellent animated movie.

It was released in late 2020 and the credits finish by noting that it was created & produced at Pixar Animation Studios "...and in homes at least six feet away from each other throughout the Bay Area."

The Abyss.

Lovecraftian cosmic horror. A local sheriff and his wife are trapped with others in a remote hospital under siege by a cult, not knowing that the worse danger is inside, and ready to shed all humanity when a portal to a hideous universe opens up in the basement. Pretty good for a B movie. Great non-cg monster effects.

Good double feature.

The sequel is set for release for the latter part of next year, likely around Thanksgiving.

Barbarian.

Disturbing horror movie, where an artist and a young woman applying for a job with a documentary maker find themselves double booked in an Airbnb located in Detroit's suburban wasteland of deserted houses. And then they come face-to-face with what's living in the hidden sub basement. If the story couldn't get any stranger, the owner of the property, a scandal ridden TV star, arrives, only to discover what's really been living there for all those years.
Highly recommended!

Last night we watched:

Coco [2017]
<=>"The celebration of a lifetime"

An outstanding film. Highly recommended.

The graphics are excellent! Get the highest resolution you can. We watched it in 4K and it was spectacular.
