"Carlos" by Olivier Assayas

I have little interest in terrorist politics or stories about self serving, puffed up little Caesars. I had seen "Summer Hours" also by Olivier Assayas and had not been impressed, but "Carlos" was very entertaining, even at over 5.5 hours in length. The film follows the career of terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, aka 'Carlos' and 'Carlos the Jackal' It is a well paced thriller that primarily focuses on the moral ambiguity and complexity of the people involved.

While I believe the film makers were trying to be un-biased in their storytelling, it seems that only the failed or aborted attacks were emphasized, giving the impression that Carlos was generally a screw up. Ultimately, Carlos killed a lot of people and while that point is made in the film, it almost feels a bit downplayed. There are practically no likeable characters in the film but they are well drawn and interesting to watch.

It is an entertaining, if somewhat long film, but it is so well paced that it is fairly easy to watch even at 339 minutes. Certainly a lot more interesting that "Che"

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Very well made film that I couldn't really follow.

I'm a big Kevin Smith fan, I'm going to see Red State tomorrow!

I recently watched '2 Days in Paris' (not starring Ms Hilton btw!) with Julie Delpy and I loved it! I love French cinema, especially Michel Gondry and Amelie. I have heard of 'A Bout De Souffle' and the 3 Colours Trilogy but I haven't seen them yet.

Quarantine 2 - FAIL. Watched up to the CDC part and had to turn it off. If you make the mistake of renting it you'll understand why.

The Mechanic - Not bad, they could have done better but still not bad.

I watched "Charlotte Gray" a few nights ago. Very good movie.

I want to see this, but it won't open in the US until December.

Drive. AMAZING. Had no expectations and was blown away.

Yeah, Drive was GREAT!

It didn't have a deep story or anything but the pacing and the soundtrack was amazing.

Plus, Gosling's character was interesting. Very stoic and childlike besides being a total bad@$$. He was somewhat savant and autistic in that sense.

Yes! I identified with him quite a lot.

Gee, I want to see Drive even more.
How bloody is it?

It's shocking bloody rather than gory bloody. Only a few moments but very affecting.

John LeCarre? Didn't BBC do that with Alec Guiness as Smiley? Incidentally I read that LeCarre decided not to write anymore about Smiley because Guiness was so good in the role he couldn't write about Smiley without picturing Guiness. This series includes Patrick Stewart (Jean Luc Picard).
Anyway, that was 30 years ago. I couldn't follow it either until I read the book.

If you already know the story you'll probably really appreciate it. The 'unexpected' bit aren't really twists, just regular drama. It's a very good film, I'm pretty sure.

I'll check it out. I'm curious as to how Smiley will be played.

The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress

It's an interesting mix of documentary (much of it accidental), and war-time propaganda...

A lot of the air combat is terribly beautiful, and its amazing to see the extent of the damage done to some of the ships that returned--a real testament to skilled pilots and good engineering.

Last night, we watched the remake of My Bloody Valentine in Sy/FY. It was an improvement on the original - which isn't saying much.
