La Dolce Vita -- so highly rated and highly praised, but boring as heck.

Being from Another Planet on the MST3K channel on YouTube.

This one was very funny. I think Joel and the robots drank too much coffee, because the jokes/riffs came fast and silly. Why caffeine would affect a robot, I don't know. It's just a show. You should really just relax. It's Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Urban Legend.

A killer on a college campus is committing murders based on urban legends. Not a great movie, but a surprisingly good cast.

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051776/

A fascinating story about a poor English woman who is determined to go to China to serve as a missionary. She deals with the cultural differences, adopts orphans, and helps the orphans escape the advancing Japanese soldiers by leading them across mountains.

Gladys Aylward, the amazing woman upon whom the movie was based, did not appreciate the Hollywood embellishments.

Last night I watched:

In the Year 2889 [1969]

Image

This is not based on the short story attributed to Jules Verne.

The studio had been planning a movie based on the short story, had registered the name, then the movie wasn't made so they had the name laying around when they made this movie.

This movie is almost boring. Some might disagree with "almost".

This movie is not very good. I can't imagine anyone disagreeing with that.

Dead of Night (1977) on MeTV's Svengoolie

A trilogy of stories, a follow up to Trilogy of Terror. Both produced by Dan Curtis of Dark Shadows (1966-1971) and The Night Stalker franchise.

Three horror stories about a vintage car that transports its driver back to 1926, the mistress of an old Victorian mansion who is scared of a vampire and a mother tormented by her dead son who she has brought back to life.

Wasp Woman (1959) on Retro TV's Off Beat Cinema

No MST3K or Rifftrax riffing, for a change. Just the film with a group of cool daddy-o hosts. Proceed to snap fingers. Groovy...

Sometimes they show era appropriate commercials.
Wasp Woman is about a cosmetic business run by an aging beauty that begins using a wasp extract that makes her grow younger. It has the side effect of turning her into a murdering wasp woman.
So, Off Beat Cinema showed an actual commercial from the fifties about a facial cleaner that cleans the radioactive dust from one's pores. I'm not kidding. They used a Geiger counter on a woman's face, so you know it's true. Maybe if one lived in Nevada?

The movie was produced and directed by Roger Corman. He also plays an uncredited role as a doctor.

Tangents
Meanwhile, because this is on late at night, Eastern Time, Retro TV shows commercials for a call and chat service that start out with lines like "Do you like to party as much as I do? Call ..." or "I'm always on the go. I'm too busy meet people like I am? Call ..." - some 877 phone number.
There are a few variations, and they all make me laugh. I found samples on YouTube. There is a YouTube channel with several commercials. I laugh at the titles and the content.

No. I have not called. Were I to call, they would end up blocking my phone number.
"It's that weirdo who talks about Korean tv series and other weird crap. He is so boring, he puts all of our party loving, on the go phone companions to sleep. We hang up on him!"
"A trouble maker, eh? Block his phone number."

There is also a commercial for Brux Night Guard, for grinding teeth. It is presented by a guy that is using WAY too much moisturizer. Just my opinion.

Next Week On Off Beat Cinema

Wrong Planet, thank you for not blocking my IP Address.

Scream Queen: My Nightmare On Elm Street.

Documentary regarding actor Mark Patton, who had been well on his way to becoming a major actor, till his career ended after his starring role in the second Elm Street movie. The movie had been blatantly homoerotic and homophobic, which had caused him great discomfort, considering that he was a closeted gay man during the AIDS epidemic, at time when homophobia was rampant. Soon, his character's sexuality was called into question with how he "screamed like a girl" (hence, the title of the documentary). After nearly dying of the disease himself, he disappeared into Mexico, and was amazed to learn years later that the movie had attained cult status.
Should be interesting for any fan of the Freddy Krueger franchise.

Last night we watched:

Rise of the Planet of the Apes [2011]
<=>"Evolution Becomes Revolution"

Excellent film. Wonderfully made.

And a good place to start watching the reboot film series.

It was a well-made, very emotional animated film. I almost cried at the end.
