Our local blockbuster is going out of business, and selling cheap movies. Snatched both Ironman from them.

I've blasted through a backlog of movies the last couple of weeks, quick reviews

Margin Call - Great cast, good plot, watchable
The Tree of Life - absolutely beautiful, was totally lost with it
The Skin I Live In - Twists and Turns, Didn't see that coming
Kill List - Has one of the nastiest death scenes I;ve seen in recent memory
Drive - Thouroughly enjoyed it all the way through

Jack and Jill

I thought it was pretty lame, I expected more from it.

Glenn Gould's Toronto (1979) - a very interesting film or more a kind of documentary about Toronto, then again ... I think it reveals something, maybe more, about Glenn Gould himself. He's more like an observer of this city where he lived in and where he spent his life and not a participant. It has also some nice funny moments, as well. It's certainly not a comedy though.

John Carter of Mars.

You hear that, Disney? I said John Carter of Mars, not John Carter.

Minor complaints aside (the first 20 minutes stumble and the screenplay is too convoluted and confusing), I really liked it. The actors are all good, it's very well-directed, and the humor is great. Andrew Stanton should have made the Star Wars prequels.

Big Man Japan. I'm at a loss to describe this bizarre movie, except to say that it's a superhero/giant monster movie/documentary spoof as only the Japanese can do it. Truly like nothing I've seen before. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes dull, and the ending is just...I have no idea. 100% what-the-hell?

The Strangers. The most impressive horror movie I've watched in a long time. It reminded me of the original Halloween, the way it builds tension and dread with camera angles and story, rather than cheap gore effects. And I never thought I would type these words, but...Liv Tyler does a fine job of acting. Perhaps the biggest shock in the movie! 8O

Saw The Secret World of Arrietty a few weeks ago. It was a nice film, but the villain was... weak, and Shaun's voice actor sounded a little too awkward (which admittedly is what they were going for, but, eh).

The American Friend is one of my three favorite films, but up until now, it was the only Wim Wenders movie I had seen. I decided to finally correct that mistake and rented Wings of Desire. I had seen the remake, City of Angels, but this was much better.

I saw that back in my college days. I actually have an appreciation for both versions.
