The Rum Diary - While not too long ago I had gone into Dark Shadows with high expectations and came away relatively disappointed, the opposite happened with Rum Diary - I went in with low expectations and came away with a new movie to add to my list of favorites. There's a quote on the cover of the DVD where a reviewer had said, "This is the most fun I've had watching Depp in years." I agree with that. Paul Kemp is a really likable character - he reminded me a little of Julia Hoffman (my favorite character) from Dark Shadows, although she lost her temper once during the movie while Kemp always kept his cool (except when he took drugs, but everybody loses their cool when they do that  )

Pretty much the only thing I disliked was the very end, when Paul is riding on the boat and the words come up on the screen informing us that SPOILERS he made it to New York, married Chenault and became a really famous journalist /SPOILERS It felt kind of tacked-on, though maybe that's how Hunter S. Thompson's original book ended and they were being true to it. I don't know because I haven't read it. I personally would have liked the ending to be a bit more ambiguous, with the screen fading to black as we see Paul's boat drifting into the sunset.

But other than that, I thought it was an excellent movie. :)

I agree 100%. I laughed myself silly watching The Rum Diaries.
I especially loved the scene where Kemp and his buddy take LSD, and Kemp thinks his buddy's tongue had become the tongue of Satan.
Giovani Ribbisi was an absolute scene stealer as the always intoxicated Neo-Nazi religion and society reporter.

I watched 500 Days of Summer, last night. I'd been putting it off, because someone said on here that it was really depressing. It was sad, but I think it has a sort of happy ending, or at least a hint that it might turn out OK.

"Summer Interlude" by Ingmar Bergman - While I enjoyed watching the film, I have to admit this isn't one of Bergman's more interesting films. It's a fairly mundane story about a woman who has grown emotionally distant after the death of her boyfriend. This is one of Bergman's earlier films and I get the impression that he was trying to find a way to tell a story that dealt with the issues of personal isolation and repressed emotions, but had not yet found the proper form. Basically the film keeps telling us how the main character has an emotional wall around her, but we never really see the dynamics of how she came to be so repressed.

One really bizarre, yet charming thing about the film; there is a brief animated sequence depicting a cartoon version of the two main character's problems with their families. It's not the sort of thing you would expect to see in a Bergman film. Maybe it's what inspired the animated bit in Woody Allen's "Annie Hall"

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - I've seen the first 20 minutes or so a few times, but this is the first time I've ever sat down and watched the entire thing. Overall it was pretty entertaining, certainly worthy of the cult classic status it has earned over the years. It did a great job doing what I'd hoped it would do when I popped it into the DVD player - taking my mind off my troubles. Though I have to admit that some parts were a little difficult to watch - the scene where Dr. Gonzo takes too much LSD and flips out in the bathtub comes to mind, as well as the part where he vomited into the toilet (I have a phobia of vomiting).

My only real complaint was that the movie seemed to drag a little in some parts; I think it would have been a bit better as an hour and a half long movie rather than a 2 hour long movie. Other than that though, it wasn't bad at all. :)

I watched My Name is Khan last night. I found it a bit uncomfortable, as if the actor had seen Rain Man and decided that was the way to go. The character was assessed as being very high functioning, so I found his portrayal and the storyline to be slightly OTT and inaccurate. I also found the wife to be unbelievably positive (as if she was on a high the whole time). And the dining scene, where Khan makes a faux pas, was totally unrealistic. The story itself was entertaining, however, it's just not a good film with regards to the Aspergers representation.

I just got "Shaun of the Dead" and "Alien" from Amazon today, and watched the former this afternoon. I love all three of Edgar Wright's movies, ("Shaun of the Dead", "Hot Fuzz", and "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World") and I think that they really don't get the respect they deserve from most people. The first two might not have gotten much attention because they are British, but even Scott Pilgrim, which was set in Canada and starred American actors was a flop at the box office. I guess people would rather see crappy Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler movies than actual comedy.

Anyways, my favorite scenes from "Shaun of the Dead" are probably when Shaun and Ed sort through Shaun's record collection deciding which to save and which to throw at the approaching zombies and when they whack the zombies with pool clubs in time with the music from the jukebox, which has randomly chosen "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen. And I love the exchange about not using "the zed word" because so many zombie movie don't use the word "zombie" in them.

Oh my god, I love Ralph Bakshi's old movies 8O . Love this and his much maligned interpretation of Lord of the Rings.

I just got from watching Prometheus a couple of hours ago. It had some good in it, I'll buy the bluray, as a fan of the Alien franchise. Its not complete garbage that deserves to burn in Sheol like the VS movies, but it was kinda disappointing and was quite disjointed.
