Good Luck Ninomiya-kun kept me thinking that it would get really interesting, but it never did. Still, I don't feel like I wasted my time. I enjoyed it, even though it didn't achieve its full potential.
Based on the recommendations here, I watched the first episode of Magi. I got the impression of a typical shonen adventure anime with stock characters and a predictable plot. Let me know if I missed something, though, because I may have just been in a rotten mood that day.

Magi's a little rocky at the beginning as it's A-1 Picture's first solo straight-up action-shounen (Fairy Tail doesn't count as that was co-produced by Satelight). But, despite its flaws, I found Magi was rewarding with its world building and character development (Ali Baba gets lots of fleshing out in the first arc) and more likeable characters than Fairy Tail (which to me suffered the same Info-Dump and large one-dimensional cast problems How to Train Your Dragon had)
Don't worry if after a while, you find Magi is not to your liking however; each to their own, right?

Typical shounen? Well it is not like the long running kind, it is probably much more about the characters rather than fighting. Alibaba has a secret past, Aladdin does not even like to fight, and then there is Morgiana. Magi would much rather present a moral problem than do a straight up fight, I am not sure how predictable earlier in the series was, but recent episodes were quite the amount of plot twists.

surprised no one is going all mad about Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, No Game No Life or Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin.
I've read Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei and I have to say, not only is the manga so far in and you still don't know the main plot but the anime is going to get EPIC real fast.
No Game No Life is similar in the sense, however, the manga seems to have been dropped or something so you only get the general plot but you know, it's a nice twist on the game world anime. If you think Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai Kuru Sou Desu yo?, it's kind of like that but odder.
I have no experience with the last one in manga form. Seems like it will have a fair share of Fan service, Main character getting slapped, Mystery and Treasure so you know, a decent plot.
I'll also suggest, to those who have not yet watched it, Log Horizon. An epic main character who uses his brain rather than being OP, So much talking, Game world trapping all the players BUT they revive on death. Basically, What some people would prefer over SAO.

My thought on the first episode was also like Mondaiji-tachi, trying to think what else it was like also made me think of Btooom probably from the shared studio, except so far less death.
After the first week I think my pick is Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou, which looks plenty funny with its first two episodes. The second episode had me laughing out loud with the main characters.
I did really enjoy the return of Date A Live, I don't think there is a harem member in anything quite like Origami.

Ok, Escha & Logy no Atelier I think is now my top pick, the first episode was so charming that I think that this might be one of those hidden gems that people might overlook, actually makes me think a little of Log Horizon for some reason in terms of "charm". It was the opening song that drew me in and I think it might actually be able to pull it off.

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou, aka The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior has gotten off to a great start, beginning to round out each character in just two episodes.
In other news, Penguindrum has some difficult-to-watch scenes. I like it, but I feel a little nervous when I start another episode. I had to grit my teeth to get through the story of Yuri's dad, the sculptor Overall, though, it appeals to my interest in other dimensions, complex characters and cute girls.
Please let us know how Escha and Logy turns out. I'm actually fairly intrigued by the alchemist part, but am rather apprehensive to watch it by the fact the series is adapted from a fairly recent video game by a relatively young anime studio*... and there's a disporportionate gender ratio...

* As far as I'm aware, this is Studio Gokumi's first independent production. Beforehand, they've only provided support for mostly comedy/ecchi/harem-anime (Squid Girl, Maken-Ki, Accel World, Hagani, My Little Sister is Amongst Them, etc) with the exception of Psycho-Pass and Another.

I will try to then. Maybe there will be a misappropriate gender ratio, but from seeing the first episode I found that the characters actually manage to go on a very fine line of bishies or cute, but not offensively so.

O.o I watched the first episode... I just kept thinking FMA and SAO met to form this... Seriously. A Floating Castle Dungeon and Alchemists from the countryside. An orphan as one of the alchemists, an artificial human. (in all fairness, this Anime has as much in common with SAO, atm, as it does with studio Ghiblis floating castle film... forgot its name...)
I really hope it's good but the first episode left an odd taste in my mouth. I can already tell that it will have a similar telling angle as Fairy Tail in the sense that the girl will be a little op and tell the story while the guy will be the main op guy who does all the hard stuff. Oh and as I said, we'll be following the girl for the most part. The guy occasionally but yeah. It seems a little bit Kawaii and Bishie while not enough (so called) "Real" people. Oh, and the scenery is a stunning point ATM. i like the sort of Steampunk feel it has going for it... I like steampunk...

Thank you so much. I do appreciate it and apologise for sounding like a stick in the mud.
I'm just really trying to avoid anything like Infinite Stratos (an intriguing concept with bio-weapons and a matriachal society until the "insert-you-as-bland-sexually-repressed male in an all-girls school where despite their being under 16, they've all got water balloons down their tops" part) or Bokura no Minna Kawai Sou (not even going to touch that one....).
It just seems rather unfair that this season is so heterosexually/fetishy-driven, yet there barely seems to be anything with an actual story to it (rather than contrived excuses for the usual ... paraphenalia). So a drowning man (not into women in that way) will clutch at a straw, so to speak. ^^; Thanks again for your help!

watch Mahouka Koukou no Rettosei. trust me. not like Infinite Stratos. i've read a ton of the manga. I know. No Game No Life may be ok for you but it does have an underline theme that could get disturbing. Seikoku no Dragonar has a few ... "natural" floatation devices but worse off, full frontal nudity of washboard children... i feel illegal just speaking of it but hey, there be dragons in it. last seasons Log Horizon should have continued. was a brilliant anime. SAO is releasing their second season, based in Gun Gale Online, soon. Keep an eye out for that. and lastly, Escha and Logy seems like it may fit closer to Fairy Tail in terms of character cast while not really having any floatation devices like that on western marvel comics. well, except for one that may be introduced later... there will almost always be a little fan service in anime... for men and women... yeah...
anyway, hope me summing up my last 2 posts helped, and as always, It wasn't me, you can't prove anything...

Thank you for the recommendations. Alas, I'm ignoring No Game No Life entirely because unfortunately, that's straight-up otaku-pandering again (real-life hikkomori - or basically shut-ins with no real life prospects or commitments - being video game demi-gods, complete with baby-faced busty revealing-outfit harem for the male protagonist). That's pretty much why I ignored Sword Art Online entirely and partly gave up on Log Horizon eventually * - I don't much care for overpowered/genius protagonists who get everything they want, including cute and/or bosomed girls chasing after them.
I'm not even going to touch Dragonar Academy. I'm sorry, but no. Like I've stated already, I'm not into women in that way so I'm certainly not into little girls either**
That said, I'll try out Mahouka Koukou no Rettosei since at least the uniforms are conservative, they all look old enough for there to be a somewhat serious plot, and the anime seems to be adapted from a light novel. Not too sure on Manabu Ono *** directing though...
Still, thanks for your time and effort, I do appreciate it.
---------
* Log Horizon I gave up around episode 14; mostly due to bad fansubbing (a lot of 'I got owned!', 'Aggro'ed', 'BIO' gamer slang and 'dude, bro' Americanisms) but also due to Satelight's erratic and oxymoronic pacing. Some episodes were brilliant with character development, world-building and plot whilst others felt devoid of anything except for a few minutes' worth of footage/dialogue. So in a way, I'm not surprised A-1 Pictures decided to do Fairy Tail Season 2 on their own, proven Satelight's bumpy track record with other projects in the past... Also, Shiro got on my nerves with the whole Devil Glasses thing. And Crusty.
** What Google Images brought up regarding Dragonar Academy; and my reading the first ten pages of the manga offended me like nothing before. Dragons can't save what I feel is a very immoral project. I'm sorry, but I have four nieces who look that age. I'm stunned Funimation got this one to dub... sigh.
*** Manabu Ono was behind Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, which I failed to understand the hype for. To me, the anime seemed confused as to who it was supposed to follow and the world-building was shaky and erratic at best. Felt like a poorly written cousin of Xam'd: Lost Memories, which at least had BONES' animation to save it. Also Ono was behind A-Channel ... (little lesbian girls doing nothing remarkable except try to go to the same high school... great...)
