When I decided to give anime about a year ago, it was out of complete curiosity, fascination, and slight boredom. I had no idea what was considered "good" so I picked one at random that I saw mentioned on Wikipedia. FLCL. After putting it on my iPod, and hunkering down under my covers one night to watch it, I immediately weirded out by it and almost turned it off and decided to forget about anime in it's entirety. But I had already promised myself that I wouldn't, so I with all my might, I resisted any urge to give up on anime and kept watching. Even though much of it didn't seem to make any sense the first time through, I rapidly became enthralled in the anime (Haruko was awesome). After watching the first six episodes through a few more times and understanding the series a little more, I looked for more episodes and was COMPLETELY taken aback when I found out that was all there was, and that the anime was in fact, just for testing purposes to green light some new animating software. Since then I've come to enjoy anime more and more. I've already watched all of Death Note twice and loved every minute of it, and have just finished Fullmetal Alchemist, and right now I'm starting to watch Bleach which so far, is pretty awesome also

If anyone wants to suggest some animes for me to watch, I'll be sure to check them out :D

EDIT

Now that I think of it, since Speed Racer counts then that is techinally my "first" anime, since I watched alot of it with my parents when I was kid :)

The first anime I ever watched was probably Pokemon, as a child obsessed with the games. Of course, I had no idea then that I was watching anime; it was just like any other cartoon to me at the time. My first exposure to anime as an intelligent art form that could be enjoyed by adults as well as children was the show Neon Genesis Evangelion. It was a little over a week after my father died towards the end of my sophomore year of high school, and my friend, looking to cheer me up, invited me over to his house for the first time. We ended up watching Evangelion together. While he went to bed after a few episodes, I stayed up until noon the next day watching the series from beginning to end. I remember thinking that this was just the most amazing and wonderful thing I'd ever seen: a cartoon with character development and meaning, exploring existential themes. Shinji Ikari reminded me a lot of myself when I was younger, so I ended up empathizing with him a lot. Although I was ready to drop dead from exhaustion by the time I reached the end, I wept when Kaworu sacrificed himself as Ode to Joy played. There was a lot about the show that I didn't understand on my first viewing, so it opened up a whole world of mysteries to me, and I spent months afterwards obsessively looking up everything I could about the show on the Internet in an attempt to answer all of my lingering questions.

Later on, I picked up a copy of Haibane Renmei on the recommendation of another friend, and that series profoundly affected me. I was still dealing with my father's death, and that show really helped me come to terms with everything. It is, to this day, my favorite anime, and I am still searching for more shows that have the same feeling.

Wait Klint you decided to watch FLCL as your first anime, and you wondered that it was strange and couldn't understand what was going on, most people don't know what the world is hapening in that, infact you would have to be amazing for the first time through. Needles to say I would think that would be a difficult one to start by it could sc are you from continuing on.

Since you are asking for suggestions I could sugest a few. I asume you have only seen dub, some of the dubs I like are Cowboy Bebop, Lucky Star, Hellsing and Code Geass.

Though it can also be fun to get started in some of the subbtitled series, most people don't expect that they will like subtitled shows but starting can open up a whole new world and there are some amazing series. The first Subbtitled series I saw was Zero no Tsukaima, still a series quite like and the voice actress in it is one of my favirouts, dub version grates my ears and only first season while the sub has three seasons. My first drama series was Kanon (2006 version) and is still one of my favirout series, some people don't think they will enjoy a drama, but Kanon 2006 is brilliant, plus was done by Kyoto Animation who do great anime. And if you are wondering where my avatar is from, it is from Moon Phase (vampires + cute cat ears), it is better then it sounds, it is done by SHAFT which also do some other good anime that description dont sound that likeable. Including Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei,a comedy about the sometimes suicidal depressed teacher, one of the best satire anime. Mariya Holic, girl afraid (alergic reaction) of boys and hopes to get a girlfriend when moving to an all girls christian school, finds what appears to be at first perfect match Maria, unfortantly she uncovers Maria's secret. Behind that cute, careing, innocent girl exterior is in fact a ......, well it is probably best left up to getting the surprise watching it  .

Well when I watched FLCL, it was kind of like watching The Matrix. The first time I watched it, I felt as though I had no idea what was going on. But after watching it through a couple more times, I got a better and better understanding of it. Though I'm still very confused about a couple of parts in it, so I wouldn't say I undertand the series completely.

Anyways, thank you for the suggestions! Judging by the descriptions, they all seem very promising :)
I'll just look into them a little bit more, and pick one I think I'll like and start watching 8)

By the way, I've actually been watching the animes I listed with subtitles. Because like you said, some voice overs can sound very unnatural and so I'd rather just watch anime the way it's meant to be seen, with the original voices. And actually, one time I started watching a clip from an anime on Youtube that was dubbed, and it freaked me out for a second when I heard them speaking English.

Plus it's kind of interesting to try and pick out words and phrases commonly used, and try to remember them for fun. :)

Thats interesting, rarely have I met someone who started out with subtitles, I just guessed that the ones you listed were ones that I myself started with dub. I also noticed that you have mostly seen larger series, except FLCL.

Any way it can be good to diverse from what you see first and try different types and even try some of the things away from the mainstream, as there are same grat shows that do not get major attention.

Back when I was 7, I came home from school everyday to watch whatever was on the Toonami block. Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, the Gundam shows... I'd say the anime I absolutely loved the most at the time was Outlaw Star. Good times. Good times.

Bubblegum Crisis, bay-bay. The original, accept no substitutes. Saw it back in 1992, and it got me hooked on anime for life.

The first hentai I saw was Urotsukidoji - Legend of the Overfiend, when I was 14. Heh.
