I think that last episode certainly proves he's a sociopath though :P

Why?

Because of the lady at the boarding school, perhaps? I had a weird feeling there. I thought Moriarty maybe organized the whole thing to make Sherlock re-live some kind of childhood trauma. He knows all about Sherlock, after all.
Also, I don't know if a sociopath would have done what he did in the end...

[I'm trying not to be too spoiler-y]

***THIS POST WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS***

Right, at the end when Sherlock's on the roof talking to Moriarty, he agrees that he's a lot like him and he says "I may be on the side of the angels but I'm not one of them." In the situation he was in, it seems like he'd be very honest, I don't think he was just trying to play games at that point.

And of course, when he was investigating the kidnappings, John had to remind him to tone down the happiness. He was just happy to have a case to solve, forgetting all that empathy rubbish :P

There's probably more examples but I've only seen the episode once so far :P

Am I the only one who's detected a Batman/Joker influence in the series? In The Final Problem, and in most screen portrayals of Moriarty, he wants to remain in the shadows without attracting attention. He approaches Holmes out of desperation to give him an ultimatum: leave me alone or I'll take you out. But in A Study in Pink, Jim is described as "a fan" of Holmes, and in The Reichenbach Fall, we're in full-on Dark Knight mode. Jim/Joker is obsessed with Holmes/Batman and needs him around, because he feels bored without him. There's always been a Holmes influence in Batman – Batman is more or less Holmes in a costume, and the Joker is Batman's Moriarty, the one villain who's more dangerous than the rest and a reflection of the hero's psyche. But now it seems like the tables have turned and the modern interpretation of Batman is influencing the modern interpretation of Holmes.

The modern Moriarty still wants to be in the shadows. He said, in Series 1, Episode 3: "Why be in the spotlight, when you can control it?"

In this last episode, he put Holmes in the spotlight. He never put himself in the spotlight at all. In fact, he lied and said he wasn't even real - you can't get any more "out of the spotlight" than that.

Jim may want to stay out of the spotlight publicly, but he certainly wants to attract the attention of Holmes. In The Great Game, he was closer to his literary counterpart, telling Holmes to leave him alone or face the consequences. He admits that he's enjoyed "the game," but he was basically just issuing a warning by showing Holmes what he could do. But in The Reichenbach Fall, he's clearly obsessed with Holmes. He seeks him out and enjoys toying with him. This is quite different from the literary version, who considered Holmes a nuisance who was best avoided, albeit one that he respected and would rather let live. I can't imagine Doyle's Moriarty ever seeking out Holmes – the closest he ever came to that was sending Holmes a note congratulating him on solving the case in The Valley of Fear. Jim still wants to kill Holmes, but he's enjoying the game quite a bit, whereas Doyle's Moriarty would rather just put a bullet through Holmes and be done with it.

I'm not criticizing the series for being different from the source material, by the way, just making an observation.

Good point, very true. That was evident from the third episode of the first series too.

It means he's not really one of the good guys. He doesn't care about helping people, not really. He just wants the case. We've already pointed out that he only cares about a few people. This isn't new information. Besides, if I was interested in something I wouldn't give a f**k about any victims either as long as it has nothing to do with me. Doesn't make you a sociopath. Don't aspie's have to be reminded to display the right emotions anyway? We're always messing it up.

Most of the stuff he says to Moriarty is there to allow him to fake his own death. For example "I'm just like you" or whatever.

Sherlock is one of the few aspie characters that I like. I enjoy this show for giving him a personality rather then portraying him as a list of symptoms. (Unlike other shows with aspies characters i.e. Parenthood.) Loved the 'mind palace' scene. It's exactly how I think when I'm brain storming.

After watching the last episode I really do see him more of a aspie than a sociopath. I really don't think a sociopath would go through that much trouble faking a death just to protect a few people. It just seems way out his way to do that for other people.

I really doubt that he's a sociopath, but I do think he wishes he was one, and even thinks of himself as one. If he could completely divorce himself from his emotions and set aside empathy completely, he'd be the ultimate analytical machine. His feelings towards Watson make me really doubt that he is though. I do think he is almost definitely an Aspie however, and this has led him (and others) to misdiagnose himself as a sociopath.

So now in the latest episode of Sherlock we have Watson diagnosing Sherlock as an Aspie. You know, this, combined with Bones and Doc Martin, leads me to believe that a somewhat positive stereotype is emerging about us Aspies.

I think everyone is now going to expect us to be able to do a "Sherlock Scan" at a moment's notice. :?

That said, Sherlock's "memory palace" scene did remind me of how my own thought process works.

Thoughts?

I do Sherlock scans all the time. (in the movie) he is right, it is sort of a curse to notice, to see everything at the same time. Thought it was an aspie thing. But I like the Downey Holmes better. :)

I second your lol-ing

Btw, jamieevren, your signature-description of youself sounds scarily similar to me. Except I can't play guitar. Good luck on the becoming a Dr thing - we need more Aspies in the medical profession.

Guitar is easy to learn, if you want to, that is. I love medicine, it has been my obsession for a straight decade now. Yes, I was obsessed with it since age five
Oh and btw, here's another Sherlock Holmes video that will either lol you out or freak you out...a spoof by Peter serafinowicz. Enjoy

(Ak! This is what I get for not ticking the 'Notify' box - I miss replies!)

^This was hilarious. It also freaked me out, but it was hilarious nonetheless.

As a side note - or maybe getting back to the main theme (even though the last post was ages ago), I was at a Seminar recently with Tony Attwood and he is of the opinion that Sherlock Holmes is definitely Aspie.

He also really likes the Harry Potter series.

Deduction? Attwood is freaking awesome.

Yeeesssss....Attwood is one of the only AS experts I've seen who is NOT full of bullcrap. And yes, I am totally certain that Sherlock Holmes is aspie :D

I love Sherlock.
Especially the Downey one. But of course not romantically, Watson. I'm asexual, you see. :P
