The Phantom of the Opera, the original silent version w/Lon Chaney. The Phantom's unmasking is one of the great cinematic scenes in history.

The Haunting Of Hill House The original. Proof of what you can't see is scary.
Paranormal Activity Again, it's what you can't see...
Event Horizon Especially if you can see it in a theater.
Prophecy Scared the sh** out of me a a kid, and I still feel traumatized by it.
The Descent The claustrophobia works fantastic with the rest of the horror.
The Nightmare Man Just when you think you've got it figured out...
Nosferatu Scariest. Vampire. Ever.

I can vouch for The Haunting of Hill House and Event Horizon

Insidious was really scary as well

The Passion Of The Christ

Don´t know if it counts as a horror film, but Satan in that movie made me not able to sleep for like three nights in a row. I felt like she (yes it´s a female actor lip synced with a male voice) was sitting in my room and stared at me. Also the demonic children were scary.

God, that new Evil Dead Movie was a lot scarier than I thought it was going to be. I don't scream or anything during movies, but this one made me jump. It also wasn't as predictable as some of them can be.

When my wife and I saw it just recently, another couple seated in the same row as us got up and left before the movie ended, after the woman was crying and shrieking for all that time. Says a lot for a horror movie.

Jacob's Ladder. It inspired a lot of films, video games and literature in its wake.
