Macross and Robotech are the same thing

Actaully, tecnically, Macross is ONE of the shows they used to make Robotech. Mabey Robotech feels a bit patched-together becos its just 3 different shows joined end-to-end (Im not sure, cos Ive never actaully seen it, mabey there put together very well)

They changed the name cos they decided to merge it with 2 other shows so they coud air it abroad.

Call me crazy, but I enjoyed Robotech! It was the first anime that I watched, and it was very ground-breaking for its time. Even though it was chopped up and respliced from 3 other shows, it was still good fun. My only gripe was the 2 other shows that came after SDF-1... I just couldnt get into them. As for Macross, I tried viewing it but the later episodes were very dull. Somehow, I cant imagine why the creaters would take a show about intergalactic invaders from another system, with themes of love and war, and turn it into a show about two test pilot's rivalry. Meh!

Oh, and the mech designs to the original Robotech/Macross pwned. They still pwn today, and no other anime can touch it!

EDIT: Oh, and a surprising bit of news for you all: the orignal company that did Macross (which got translated to Robotech here) got sued, and lost the rights to the line drawings and TV series over there. But, Robotech here escaped virtually unscathed... they just had to alter the characters a little and change the mech designs. In an ironic twist of events, the company that lost the rights to Macross in Japan is making a movie based on Robotech here called Shadow Chronicles!

I'm going to buy a DVD of Gankutsuou with my birthday money. That series looks pretty good- I'm eager to see it.

My first anime was Speed Racer. Then in junior high they started showing Macross and it was much better than any American cartoon. I still have a third generation video tape copy of Akira, in Japanese without subtitles, that I got when the movie was first released on laserdisk. I still like that version better than the old dubbed version.

I can remember being amazed and happy when the first licensed subtitled anime started apearing in the U.S.

Anime is apparently one of my aspie "Interests".

I second the recommendation for Anime Suki, it's a great site. I get the torrents to all of the unlicensed, just-out-in-Japan series there.

Favorite Old School Anime:

Akira, Cowboy BeBop, Princess Mononoke, Lupin III:Castle of Cagliostro, Bubblegum Crisis (Original series and 2040), Dirty Pair, Habeime Remei (I can't remember how to spell this one), Outlaw Star, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Kimagure Orange Road, Kino's Journey, Lain, and lots more that I can't think of offhand.

And the new stuff:

Bleach, Yakitake! Japan, Basilisk Kouga Ninpo Cho, Gokujou Seitokai, Mushishi, Karas, Trinity Blood, Futakoi, Honey and Clover, Tsukuyomi Moon Phase, Keroro Gunsou, Black Cat, Solty Rei, Rozen Maiden Traumend and Panda Z. (That's not all the series I'm following right now, just the not-released-in-America ones I like the most.)

Mostly I like the Science Fiction action adventure anime, but I do have a weakness for shows like Honey and Clover and Kimagure Orange Road that are about friendships between nice people.

Oh, and I thought the Ninja Scroll movie was much better than the tv series. I didn't bother to watch after the first few episodes, but I liked the move quite a bit.

Ok I can't help but post in this thread. :)

First anime I ever saw was Robotech, but I didn't know it was anime at the time. Probably the first time I saw anime as anime was Oh My Goddess and Tenchi Muyo. I'll always be a Tenchi fan, atl east of the OAVs. Didn't care as much for the TV series (any of them) or the movies but they werent bad.

I have a wide variety of tastes. I'm not a terribly big fan of the "giant robot" genre but I do enjoy things with mystical or supernatural overtones, which is why I like Evangelion and Dual. I'm also a big fan of the romantic comedy stuff and sometimes even dip into what would best be described as 'chick flicks" like Fushigi Yuugi, Kita-e and Memories Off. :)

Other all-time favorites: Neon Genesis Evangelion (mind **** of the century, that one), El-Hazard, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Fushigi Yuugi, BGC 2040, Sol Bianca, .hack//SIGN, Martian Successor Nadesico, Kiddie Grade, Scrapped Princess (the source of my avatar), Mai HiME....I could go on and on here. :)

Currently I'm watching Mai Otome (aka Mai Z-HiME), Shuffle, Ichigo 100%, Shakugan no Shana and Kannaduki no Miko. And thatonly leaves me probably 80 more series I have ready to watch but not watched yet...im just a *bit* behind. :)

In case it's not obvious I love to talk about anime so feel free to PM or IM me anytime.

It's a retelling of 'The Count of Monte Cristo' set in a sci-fi future and told from Albert's perspective.
The plot basically concerns the smooth, sinister, blue-skinned, pointy-eared count pretending to be Albert's friend as he tries to weasel his way into getting his revenge on Albert's father.
There are plenty of interesting twists throughout the series that I really don't want to spoil, so I won't.
The way the art is done, with extravagently colourful hair and clothes having bizarre designs and textures that change and move throughout the series, is very interesting. I don't think I've seen anything like it before. It's a new level of excellence.
And, yeah, it is licensed. I own the first DVD, and I'm really intent on collecting the rest.
