The Shining is one of my faves, as well. It is horror classic.

Aspie critics, go back to your Anime.

:thumleft: I agree, The Shining was awesome.

another one of my favs: Session 9. it's damn scary, not only because David Caruso's in it.

I thought The Shining was brilliant, and pretty scary too!

Then again, I was about 16 when I saw it, and I still had regular nightmares about ghosts back then. I like to think I wouldn't be so disturbed by the film if I saw it again now.

I don't think you can compare "the shining" to something like "hostel" they are in an entirely different class.
The Shining is a great film but only if that's the sort of film you want to see.

Hostel is straight-up torture porn, as are all the Saw movies. Without the torture/gore/death, they'd be nothing.

how was the shining awesome? 3/4 of it was BS dialogue that could put an insomniac to sleep. :?

The movie is slow-paced and quiet, but the quietness and austere visuals contribute to the sense of mounting fear and dread. For the sake of discussion and debate, which parts had the "BS dialogue" in your opinion? Any particular act?

Come to think of it, I was pretty annoyed with Shelley Duval's performance of a typically helpless female. But this movie was made in 1980, remember. The year after I was born.

Which scene scares me more? Jack's encounter with the dead lady in the bathtub or the tidal wave of blood gushing out of the elevator?

The Overlook HOtel speaking through the mouth of Danny Torrance was probably the spookiest for me.

Great, great movie. Utterly chilling. I love it.

I can kind of see someone renting it expecting a certain "horror movie" formula, and hating it, but then I hate most "horror" movies anyway. Tastes differ...

Personally, I enjoyed it and found it very interesting. It was not scary, I'll admit that. However, I do know others who hated the movie so you're not the only one. One example of a horror movie I thought was really bad and boring was The Others.

I thought The Others was pretty scary/creepy/suspenseful and very well-done. How about that.

I don't think you can blame Shelley for that - it's Stanley Kubrick's fault.

This movie set the record for the number of retakes of a single scene (127) so obviously Stanley had a certain way he wanted her to act and she was forced to do so.

I read somewhere that Stephen King hated the movie.
