So, continuing my journey into Indonesian cinema, I have turned to Youtube which has some old Indonesian flicks uploaded.
Today, I saw an action movie called 'Panther' (1995). Oh boy what a movie that was. I mean, it's not much to look at; it has some nice parts, some cool fight scenes and gun battles. But it's also quite over the top, in terms of the violence employed. It's not really that heavy on gore, but the sheer cruelty of the bad guys in this movie is unfathomable. There is a second-in-command to the boss bad guy, who's favourite mode of killing is using a gun that shoots arrows (not a crossbow, but a GUN), and at one point she kills off a target by biting his throat while having sex with him. Yeah.
The opening scene is totally extreme, with a family (mostly women and children) being completely gunned down and otherwise massacred by the mobsters, and the impossible happens toward the end, when a minor character who has just died gets a funeral, and that very funeral is attacked by the gangsters, resulting in the deaths of the character's family and friends attending the funeral. It's like WTF, when I saw that scene happening, it was... Jeeeeesus. I mean, you actually see the bad guys, some twelve or so of them, slowly walk up to the funeral, armed and dangerous, and you just KNOW what's coming, yet you tell yourself out loud: "No. They're not going to do this. They're not going to cross this line." And then that's exactly what they do.
As an action flick, I thought it was reasonably entertaining; the direction of the fight scenes was adequate, though not without its flaws. The plot, on the other hand, was confusing. Characters were introduced quickly without being given much background, and transitions from scene to scene made for a difficult-to-follow narrative.
I enjoyed it quite a bit though. The main actor was like an Indonesian Steven Seagal.
