Them lowdown kansas redlegs only made one mistake.... They let Josey Wales live.

When I'm asked what my favorite Clint Eastwood western is, I usually say High Plains Drifter without even thinking....

But that is not right. My favorite Clint Eastwood western has to be The Outlaw Josey Wales.

Clint's hero is so much more sympathetic than usual, and Dan George steals every scene he's in.

This makes me very happy. :D

We rented Barricade last night. Not bad, but not exceptionally good, either.

I watched The Artist today in my film making class. A silent/talkie film... Never thought I'd enjoy it so much, but it's hard to figure out what's going on sometimes. :?

The Grapes of Wrath

A well-done and sad story about a poor midwest family.

"The Game" - I'm a bit conflicted about this. It wasn't bad, although throughout the early part of the film, I kept wondering if the absurdly expositional dialog was an intentional bit of meta-cinema. Apparently not. I think they should have popped for a couple more re-writes before locking the script. In some ways the ending was obvious, but I feel it was the only reasonable ending for that story.

You are talking about the David Fincher movie right? With Michael Douglas and Sean Penn? It has been a while since I have seen it, but I loved that movie. I didn't think the ending was obvious at all. It also just recently came out on blu-ray, I should get it at some point.

As for what I have seen recently. I just got done watching Little Shop of Horrors, the Frank Oz one not the Roger Corman one, specifically the director's cut that just came out on blu-ray and restored the original ending. It did not disappoint. I loved the movie already but they changed the ending for the theatrical release to be different from the stage play and make it happier for audiences. The original filmed ending used in the director's cut is closer to the stage play, and totally awesome to see on film.

Made in Dagenham.
we watched it in queer collective. i really liked it. it made relevant points about working class power, the need for rank and file control of unions, the relation between union bureaucrats, politicians and capital, the way class struggle can break down various oppressions and was just generally cool. i liked the bit where the female lead blasts her husband for pointing out things that he did that were good as if it were special when really it should be the norm because i hate it when poeple do that. it did have its flaws though. at times it portrayed gender, as opposed to class, as the dividing factor in the world which meant that ruling class women were portrayed sympathetically and as friends of the workers because they were women which is rubbish- especially the politician who was really pro-business and reactionary. it was also pointed out that stock footage showed a diversity of races but the film itself was white as could be. and everyone was unrealistically traditionally beautiful.

The Nightmare Man. Scary, low budget horror film without any big name actors and a minimum of gore. Still, it proves less can be more.

The Ring (American version)

Creepier than most horror movies I've seen (though truthfully I haven't seen that many). Not really anything majorly scary, just... unsettling. I especially liked the deliberate use of the Uncanny Valley effect (the first victim's facial expression and her head falling and hitting her chest, and the distorted photographs) - which, IMHO, is what made it so creepy it the first place. I also liked how the movie acts like it's about to end on a high note at one point, only for something bad to happen once again. My only complaint is that most of the creepiness happens early on in the movie, and later on it's more about piecing together what happened to the dead girl who uses the videotape to kill people. The mystery surrounding the dead girl and the way that the main characters go about solving it made me wonder if Stieg Larsson (creator of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) may have been inspired by this movie.

Anyway, the infamous scene where she comes out of the TV wasn't scary at all to me, partially because I had known about it for years beforehand and partially because I think they missed an opportunity to use the uncanny valley effect - just having long, stringy hair and a white dress does not make a scary villain, in my opinion. If they had distorted her face somehow and did an upclose of it, that would have been better.

Finally, I was surprised that Gore Verbinski directed this movie, because he is better known for directing the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Rango and the upcoming Lone Ranger. I would have never suspected that he could do horror so well. Then again, this movie did feel longer than its running time, and I often feel that Gore Verbinski movies tend to drag a little bit.

M.Night Shamalah's The Happening. It was a lot better than the critics gave it credit for.

The Dark Knight Rises. Since I did not watch it while it was on theaters (no one to go watch with), I have downloaded a bootlegged version (the bootleggers filmed the theater screen). Bad image quality, good sound and I did not spend anything at all.

My sister rented a copy of Tucker and Dave VS Evil and the three of us watched it last night. Despite the movie being bloody, the three of us laughed so hard, we enjoyed watching dumb college kids get killed.

If you haven't seen this, think of this as an American Shaun of the Dead, but with dumb college kids, not zombies.

Serpico

The true story about Frank Serpico, a honest New York cop who testified against police corruption in 1971. Serpico was played by Al Pacino.
