Been working my way through some of the Blu-rays I recently picked up super cheap:

Taxi Driver (1976)

Not much to say about this one that hasn't been said a million times. Anyone who hasn't seen it should, but be warned that it's more disturbing than entertaining.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

Much better than the first one. It reminds me of the 80s when they were still making great buddy cop movies like Lethal Weapon 1 and 2.

Black Dynamite (2009)

Terrific parody of/tribute to 70s blaxploitation films. The best comedy since Bad Santa.

And on DVD...

Ninja Assassin (2009)

27% on Rotten Tomatoes, and that's a shame, because this is quite a good action movie. It's fast and frantic but the director thankfully keeps the camera steady so you can tell what the hell is going on, and there's no techno music during the many, many fight scenes. My only complaint is that there isn't a lot of humor, but other than that, I'd recommend ignoring the critics and giving this a try.

"Craigslist Joe" Really good movie. It kind of shows you what people are like and how we still have a sense of community even with all the social media sites like fb. He lives off the goodness of other, leaves the house with no money and brings only his laptop and phone to get on craigslist to find ads where people are offering free rides, because they want company or they might offer a free lunch if you help them somehow and he finds volunteer places to learn about people.

How the West Was Won

Terrific Epic-Western about four generations of a family during the 1800s.

Definitely interested in this.

Yesterday, I saw in 3D Rise of the Guardians.

Yes, this is very much The Avengers for kids, but without the awesomeness
that made The Avengers such a great movie.

Even though this was fun to watch, there's nothing much to rave over and I might get the DVD when it comes out.
After seeing Rise of the Guardians, I should have seen either Skyfall or Wreck-It Ralph again, or perhaps either Flight or Life of Pi.

Saw two movies this weekend, my g/f dragged me to both

Twilight / Breaking Dawn 2 - I did not see the first movie in this series, but I saw this and the previous one. Both were horrible, just horrible. Really aimed at teenage girls and those who think vampires are romantic, but really this is like a bad WB show on the big screen and just not very good. Very little happens, the whole point of the movie seems to be to lead up to the climactic battle, which without spoiling anything I'll just say is a big let down.

Anna Koriniva - This is a decent enough movie, but its also one where not a lot happens. Basically the story of a woman who engages in an extramarital affair in pre-communist Russia, and about her guilt and her husband's reaction. On the plus side its beautifully shot, great set and costume design, and well acted, but the story itself wasn't all that, to me. Certainly more of a "chick flick" than for guys.

Much apologies if I sound annoying, but the title actually is Anna Karenina, not "Anna Koriniva."

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2

After 45 minutes of desensitising (and running the movie Vampires Sucks in parallel in my head). The movie became enjoyable.

I saw Skyfall and Life of Pi.

Skyfall was okay, definitely nothing like the old bond films, but I adored Life of Pi. I'd go see it again in a heartbeat. :)

"The Reflecting Skin". I saw this years ago shortly after it was released and liked it quite a lot. It has some flaws, particularly the spotty acting of the boy who plays the protagonist. But on the whole, it's a good, creepy little film.

It is about a boy growing up in rural Iowa. He fears a widowed neighbor is a vampire and in trying to protect his brother and friends from her, he ends up causing problems. It's a type of story I like; where the main character, while trying to do good, ends up discovering they are the villain of the story.
