MIB3 and Battleship -- enjoyed both, but didn't expect much of the acting (and to be perfectly honest, I don't notice BAD acting anyway!). Prefer Battleship because they used the real U.S.S. Missouri that's stationed in Pearl Harbor AND actual veterans. Sure, the latter knew nothing about acting, but I LOVED those scenes when the old guys were firing up the analog cannons!

Yesterday, I saw Life of Pi in 3D.

I haven't finished reading the book, but wow...Ang Lee definitely knew what he was doing when he was filming this.

After the movie finished, I thought of the movie as 2001 meets Castaway, because the tiger, whose name is Richard Parker, is the "Wilson" figure who is also, in many ways, HAL 9000.

The 3D is amazing, some scenes had the feel of pieces of artwork coming to life, and overall, a great movie. I'd see this again.

However, the only WTF is some critics have compared Life of Pi to Avatar. I don't see any similarities between Life of Pi and Avatar.

"Mystic River" by Clint Eastwood - This was one of his better ones. It had some flaws, but generally it kept my attention, the acting was good and the ending wasn't stupid.

I'll probably rent it tomorrow night ... is the remake of Total Recall (with Colin Farrell) any good?

Oh and p.s. ... The Life of Pi was amazing, and I hear it's faithful to the book. But, no, the only similarity to Avatar is the 3D and the fact that both have beautiful nature scenes in them.

"Beasts of the Southern Wild". There is some really nice cinematography in this film. The editing is good and it is effectively directed. There are a lot of things I liked about it. But it also feels like the kind of film privileged white folks make about poor black folks to make themselves feel better about their advantages.

The problem is it seems to take the position that the characters are spiritually superior so it's okay that they live in abject poverty. It suggests that those who evacuated the bayous before Katrina hit lacked something. It villianizes the healthcare and shelter workers and treats the attempt to help the victims of the storm as an attempt to lock them away and to take away their dignity.

Unfortunately the film comes across as a well meaning, but naive treatment of those living in the bayou as "noble savages". I suspect this film will win a lot of awards because it is the sort of thing that lets the audience feel like they are respectful and inclusive of others without actually having to do anything.

Rise of the Guardian.

would have enjoyed it more had there been the parents controlling their children, who just wanted to make noise. :x

The new Bond movie, of course... So good.
Just saw "This Must Be The Place" with Sean Penn - he plays an aging Robert-Smith-esque rock star, and goes back to America after his father is ill. Brilliant movie, loved it.

"Koyaanisqatsi" I used to watch this film obsessively in the mid80s. It still remains mesmerizing despite it's lack of a plot or story.

"Seven Psychopaths". Entertaining and well made. A bit too much killing for my tastes, but certainly watchable.
