The Hound of the Baskervilles (1972)

A mediocre made-for-TV version of a Sherlock Holmes story that's been filmed many times better, both before and after. Anthony Zerbe and William Shatner have supporting roles and bring a little life to it, but they're the only ones. Watch the 1939 version instead. Or the 1959 version. Or the 2002 version. Or the 2012 version...

Yesterday, I saw Identity Thief.

Although ID theft & credit-card fraud are nothing to laugh at IRL, I will admit that this movie is hilarious! Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy have good chemistry together and if you need a good laugh, I strongly recommend you go see Identity Thief.

I recently watched Pink Floyd's "The Wall", well, it was about a month ago, but I don't really watch many films.

I also watched Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone last Sunday, but mainly spent the almost three hour period discussing with my mum what terrible acting was occurring. Tragic. I prefer the books, and they aren't exactly great...

Twins

Arnold and Danny DeVito are unalike long lost twins who meet up and search for their mother.

Warm Bodies

Pretty much a romantic comedy with zombies in it. Although not the best I've ever seen, it's a pretty good movie. I certainly enjoyed it.

Django Unchained

Slightly overlong and talky, but Jamie Foxx is brilliant as the titular slave turned bounty bunter and Christopher Waltz is scene-stealing as his German accomplice. The violence is unsettling and the N word gets dropped a lot, but it's definitely one of Tarantino's underrated best.

Requiem for a Dream

A disturbing film about various drug addictions and how it affects the lives of four people.

Wreck-It Ralph

Pros

- The whole thing is cute without being saccharine
- Many laugh-out-loud moments
- Good message about accepting and loving yourself for who you are
- No prior knowledge of videogames required to appreciate this movie - it's all about fleshing out the original characters
- The voice actors all did an excellent job - If I didn't know any better, I would have sworn that Vanellope's voice actor, Sarah Silverman, was a little girl (she's at least twice Vanellope's age IRL)

Cons

- The romance between Felix and Sgt. Calhoun felt rushed and shoehorned in Was it really necessary to have the toughest woman ever in a Disney movie get married so soon? Or even at all? Can't tell if it was because they wanted romance for the sake of romance or to avoid suspicions of lesbianism in a character who is voiced by a RL lesbian... Maybe a little of both?
- Some moments feel a little childish, such as the slapstick and some of the banter between Ralph and Vanellope
- Some parts weren't as "epic" feeling as they could have been (Ralph's time in Hero's Duty was the biggest example, the race in Sugar Rush being the other)
- It didn't ever feel like the characters were in any serious danger, even though there was a villain and some characters warn against the danger that dying in a different game kills game characters off for real. Some of the potential for drama/tension was wasted, is the point I'm trying to get at here.
- Not really a fault of the movie itself, but spoilers run rampant on fan websites such as Deviantart, and speaking from personal experience, having been inadvertently spoiled somewhat lessened the impact of the movie's more emotional moments for me. So tread cautiously.

Despite my section of cons being longer than the list of pros, I actually did enjoy this movie and would recommend it to others, if you're ever in the mood for something light and fluffy. I just wouldn't recommend thinking too hard about it (like I just did) or building it up in your mind to be more than what it is before you go and see it (which is also something that I did - I wound up actually losing sleep over anticipating to see this movie! Can you believe it?)

Anna Karenina (2012) - a movie that seems to create the effect that you as the audience is actually in a theatre and aware of every scene change, e.g they change the walls, the chairs etc. as they walk to each room. There was a interesting moment where I thought the scene was relevant to our time, a couple playing what appears almost similar to scrabble but with big letter blocks, they were sending each other private messages, similar to what one would see today between people texting each other. The private and quick way they were sending each other messages, while the other people were oblivious to what was going on between the two of them. Everybody knew his intentions, their conversation was private.

Lincoln (2012) - better than the Lincoln fighting vampires movie :)
