"Eagle Vs. Shark". Awkward people in a relationship comedy. The problem I had with this film is that the guy is pretty unlikable and the girl should have left him.

"The Doll". A German silent film from 1919 about a young man who is afraid of marriage, but has to marry to receive an inheritance. He orders a mechanical doll to trick his uncle into thinking he is actually married, but when the doll maker's apprentice breaks the doll, he convinces the doll maker's daughter to pretend to be the doll. Ok... This isn't the greatest film ever made, but the girl playing the daughter seems to be having a great time and she is fun to watch.

"Lars and the Real Girl". Since my name is Lars and I have been single all my life, a couple of people pointed out the similarity of this film to me. I found it strange to hear my name used over and over in the film. Lars is a very uncommon name in Southern California. I guess people with more common names are used to hearing other people being called by their names, but to me, it was a distinctly weird experience. Anyway, I thought the reaction of the community did not ring true and I felt that the film makers didn't have a real understanding of the character. Mostly the film didn't work for me. The one character who seemed believable was the brother.

It's a bit odd though... This weekend I watched three films where the main character had a relationship with a real or perceived artificial woman. ("Fellini's Casanova" was the other one.)

I did like Lars and the Real Girl, it was strange to see the whole town play along with him. I can only think of Austin Powers' fembots, next to be in the list :D

EDIT: not sure if you remember this film: Android (1982) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083557/

Jack the Giant Slayer in 3D

Not exactly a kiddie flick, but worth watching. Bryan Singer, who directed Jack the Giant Slayer, definitely understood what he was getting himself into when he signed on to direct.

Ewan McGregor doesn't have much to do in this, other than stealing scenes.

I agree. Although Bryan Singer's direction and the acting were good, all the movie needed was a better script, though
Jack the Giant Slayer is ten times better than that piece of crap Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, which was released back in January.

Dredd (2012)

After the 1995 turkey that saw Sylvester Stallone try to outham Armand Assante in terms of acting and annoying comedy value from Rob Schneider, the beloved 2000 AD judge is reborn in a blaze of grim and grungy ultraviolence, and the helmet gets to stay on this time.

Karl Urban instantly erases memories of Stallone as the titular judge, who joins forces with Oliva Thirlby's rookie psychic judge to survive a 200 storey death trap tower block that is ruled by the sinister and scar-eyed Lena Headey, who is distributing a lethal new drug that slows down a person's perception of time.

Forget any Stallone comparisons, Urban's Dredd punts him into oblivion and delivers an underrated gem.

The Sessions (2012) - I was the only one in the theatre laughing at his humour. Everybody was so serious. I thought it was excellent. Why not just appreciate the guy for what he is, instead of just pity all the time.
Fanie Fourie's Lobola (2013) - An Afrikaner man marrying an African woman. That would be an Afrikaans speaking person (South African) from European descendants marrying an African girl. I wasn't sure if she was Pedi or Zulu/Bantu. Anyway this guy manages to fall for someone of a different race and then ends up trying to follow her traditions. I thought it was going to be slapstick comedy, but it turned out surprisingly educational and close to the reality of what is going on here.

The Last Exorcism Part II

Although there were a few instances where I had to either cover my eyes or look away from the screen, this was an intense movie, but not scary. Otherwise, a likeable movie.

I went on a documentary watching binge:

Gerhardt Richter Painting - somewhat interesting, but I don't feel it got into what drives the artist's work.

The wild and wonderful whites of West Virginia - a film about a family with a lot of problems

Winabago Man - surprisingly affecting film about a man whose out takes from an industrial film became an Internet meme.

I think we're alone now - creepy film about two delusional fans of a 1980s pop star.

My Father the Genius - a woman's film about her architect father. he seems to be a legend in his own mind and can't understand why he isn't famous.

Shut up little man - two guys recorded their fighting neighbors in the mid 80s.

A Complete history of my sexual failures - tongue in cheek film where a guy tries to interview all the girls that dumped him.

Following Sean - after making a film about the 4 year old son of free living hippies, the film maker returns to see how the boy turned out 25 years later.

Private practices - a sex surrogate works with two patients.

German film starring Peter Lorre as a child murderer. When the cops efforts to catch him cause too much trouble for the crooks, they also join in on the manhunt.
