Three questions for anime fans
I too started out wondering what is the use of watching it in Japanese, when English is available, or even watching Japanese, because I thought I would miss out on things they are saying and emotions. But after watching some japanese only I actualy found you can pick up things that are not properly carried when watching english, such as voices tend to get anoying, I am sorry if that sound . But stopping at only one show can lessen what experience you can have.
Oh no, you misunderstand me. I only OWN Fullmetal Alchemist, but I have seen up to and including Volume 5 of Death Note as well as some of Peacemaker K-something and some of Inuyasha. I also own some of the Pokemon anime but it's not the sort of thing most people are interested in.
Still, I would buy a series if I liked it enough, I would have bought the rest of Death Note but I couldn't do it without buying the first five and that would be always in the back of my mind.
If you know an extremely good series though, I'll try it. I liked Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist and didn't like Inuyasha or that Peacemaker thing if that helps. In fact, Fullmetal Alchemist was my obsession when I first got it, i would just watch the episodes over and over without getting bored.
By the way, if you have seen Death Note did you think the earlier epidoes were MUCH more interesting than the later ones?

Looking through some good dub anime, maybe things like Bleach. Full Metal Panic (I prefered the sub), Code Geass. And maybe if you are willing to check watch in subs I recomend Zero no Tsukaima (Familiar of Zero) the dub is quite terrible and doesn't have the 2nd and 3rd season, it could be a good stepping stone from Full Metal Alchemist to more romantic titles and was my first try at a subbed anime.

1. What are your favorite anime?
Some of mine are
Neon Genesis Evangelion,
Elfin Lied,
Chobits,
Kare Kano,
Kimi ni Todake,
Boogiepop Phantom,
Noir,
Phantom : Reqieum for the Phantom (like Noir but better),
Fate Stay Night,
Ergo Proxy,
Spice and Wolf(did anyone see this one coming ),
Ghost In The Shell,
Blood+,
Tokyo Godfathers,
Spirited Away,
Princess Mononoke,
Shinigami Ballad,
Guin Saga.
2. Subs or Dubs?
Definately subs, although lately I've found myself understanding more and more of the dialogue without needing to look at the subs. There are a few dubs I don't mind, Neon Genesis and GITS come to mind, but most of them are poorly done.
3. What anime series do you think are underrated?
I think Spice and Wolf is under rated, it's a lovely anime but it hasn't got much coverage here, which is a shame. And it's soundtrack is also unique and delightful.

I also very much enjoy the soundtrack to Spice and Wolf (just decided to turn songs on), I can even sing along to Ringo Biyori. Certain sites I visit hold Spice and Wolf in high regard. I would probably day the interactions between Lawrence and Horo to be some of my favirout.
I trust you have heard the good news about the english release of Spice aswell as the english translation of the original novel being released. Hopefully it's following will increase, though I will have to wait a while till Madman gets the rights to distribute it.

1. My current favorites are Air Master, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Tegami Bachi (Letter Bee). Some of you older members may know me as the girl who was completely obsessed with Hellsing and Trinity Blood, but my passion for them has finally died out.
2. I prefer to watch my anime dubbed, the primary reason being that when I think about my favorite characters it's easier for me to imagine them talking if I know how they would sound in English. If that makes any sense... I hope it does. Still, I have no problem with subs and I will watch them if nothing else is available as is the case with Tegami Bachi and Air Master.
3. Air Master is definitely underrated. It's basically about a freakishly tall, redheaded and boyish former gymnast named Maki Aikawa who becomes a street fighter, making outrageous friends, enemies and potential love interests along the way. The whole series is a tongue-in-cheek, subtle parody of beat-'em-up anime. Despite that, the fight scenes are brutal and beautifully animated. From what I understand, the main reasons people don't watch it are the art style, which looks more cartoonish than pretty, and the character Renge, who has an extremely annoying voice. Apparently Air Master never caught on with American audiences, because Geneon stopped distributing it even before the company took a nosedive. Thankfully it was picked up by Funimation, and if you live in America, you can watch it on their video portal. If you don't live in America, you can still watch it on crunchyroll.com.
I think Tegami Bachi is underrated as well. It focuses on Lag Seeing, a 12 year old boy who is a Letter Bee, someone who delivers packages and mail in the land of Amberground. However, danger lurks around every corner as Gaichuu, giant mechanized bugs, attempt to kill humans who dare travel between Amberground's three cities. Amberground itself is very unusual, as it is a land of eternal night lit only by an artificial sun. You can watch Tegami Bachi regardless of where you live at crunchyroll.com.

1: Favorites are Full Metal Alchemist, Gurren Lagann, Fruits Basket, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, and though I know many people may not count it as actual anime, I really enjoyed Avatar: The Last Airbender. There are many others, but I can't think of them at the moment.
2: It depends on the quality for me. I can watch a series subbed or dubbed, and my preference differs from show to show.
3: I don't know that I can say what's underrated, since I'm not sure what people think of some of the anime I like. I guess Avatar, since some people seem to dislike it for not technically "anime".
Clearly, I've not seen as much as some of the others in here, and if anyone can recommend something else to watch, I'd appreciate it.

Air Master does sound interesting. I'll have to look into it and check it out sometime.
I've been reading the Tegami Bachi manga in Shonen Jump, and I think it's a pretty good series.
Yes I heard, Yen Press are doing the translation, but it was only released in the US in late December IIRC.

You definitely should! Air Master isn't to everyone's tastes, but I adore it. My favorite part about the series is the fact that it has strong female characters who kick even more butt than the male characters. In fact, another thing critics like to gripe about is that the female characters aren't "girly" enough, especially Maki, whom I admit could pass for a man if she wasn't wearing her school uniform all the time. Personally I think it's refreshing to see tomboys in anime and manga. That's why I'm also fond of Revolutionary Girl Utena and Rose of Versailles.
Yeah, I think Tegami Bachi is pretty good too. Lag Seeing has a special place in my heart since he's an albino, because my favorite original character was an albino too. I also think the Letter Bee uniforms are kind of hot. And I love the scenery of Amberground, and how when the Gaichuu explode it looks like it's snowing.
Yeah, I loved Hellsing at the time, it has been one of my favorite
I just finished watching "Shuffle" which was both funny and heartbreaking. And I'm half way through "Strawberry Panic", and it's been fun so far. Even though I'm a man, I really love strong female characters as well, which is why those 2 series have been fun and I absolutely adore Studio Ghibli movies.
Also Funimation is re-releasing the original Dragonball with recolored and cleaned up prints and new voice work, and that's been a blast. And I've gone back and re-watched Gundam Seed and Rah Xephon, which rocked my socks right off.

I was a die-hard fan of Hellsing for the past 3 years, but I've lost my passion for it after learning everything there is to know about it. However, I still think it's one of the best anime/manga/OVA series I've ever seen and I recommend it highly to anime fans who aren't faint of heart.
I might check out Shuffle, but I'm always leery of anime I know will make me feel sad while watching it (which is why I wouldn't touch Grave of the Fireflies with a 10ft pole).
I've been meaning to watch Strawberry Panic since I'm a bit of a yuri fan even though I'm a straight woman, lol.
Even crazier, I'm a straight male, and I love the yuri Strawberry Panic It's not hent, it just shows very nice relationships of all flavors between women, and some of them happen to be romantic relationships. My favorite part so far has been how funny it has been at times, especially with all the typical japanese high school girl fascination with school clubs. They had me laughing out loud at times.
I own Grave of the Fireflies, but I can say that I watch it rarely because it is so heartbreaking to me. So I can respect your decision to not want to watch it. While Shuffle is not as heartbreaking, it is still extremely rough at times, so I'm glad to have warned you about it.

A good yuri anime that has been playing recently (season just finished) is Sasameki Koto. I havent seen a lot of yuri anime, but this has been fun for the range of characters, my favirouts are the crossdresser and the yuri novel fan.
Hellsing is a favirout of mine, though I am a bit anoyed about them not being released in aus, let alone in dub. I am a bit excited now though because of the tenth manga volume was recently released, and I am waiting for it to come to a store near me.
Shuffle is interesting, hate it, some love it, some say that it only gets good half way through. But everyone who has watched it will remember one part, and that is when a character goes yandere (look it up) and an ending that could be hard to spot from the begining. Though it does get a bit corny at parts, and has some big ecchi parts.
I have been watching Letter Bee (Tegami Bachi) aswell, I don't usualy say that shotas are cute, but Lag was quite cute in the santa outfit. Pluss Niche is comedy gold aswell as awesome.
Want know some that are sad, check out Ait, Kanon 2006 and Clannad/Clannad After Story. I found myself at times crying quite a bit, and mixed with some great comedy, they are some of my favirouts.

Oh! I know of another good yuri anime - there's my latest obsession, Revolutionary Girl Utena. In the TV anime, the romantic relationship between Utena and Anthy is only implied, but in the movie they are more open and aggressive about their feelings. The author of the original manga, Chiho Saito, even said that Utena and Anthy are meant to be "like a married couple". Then of course there's the whole deal between Juri and Shiori...
But there are many good reasons to watch Revolutionary Girl Utena besides the yuri, and even if you don't like that kind of thing you'd still probably find it enjoyable. In fact, there are a wide variety of relationships in the show, from yuri to yaoi to het. The visuals are, in my opinion, beautiful - outdated, perhaps, but still beautiful. I'm particularly fond of the characters' Keane-esque doe eyes, and the rose motif that is used liberally throughout the show. But even more than that, there is a lot of symbolism that always leaves you deep in thought, trying to peel back the many layers of meaning behind it all. Then there's the character development - all the main characters have multiple facets to their personalities. Everyone seems to have their share of both light and darkness within their hearts, to varying degrees. Someone on the TV Tropes website called RGU "shojo's answer to Evangelion". I'd say that description isn't too far off, if you replace sentient robot vs. angel battles with flowery sword fights.
I've always loved Revolutionary Girl Utena, since I first saw it many years ago So that is a great recommendation. I've never heard it called an answer to Evangelion, which I also love, but I guess I can see that. For me, at the time, I considered it more of a partner to "Vision of Escaflowne". Thanks for the new recommendation IdahoRose I finished Strawberry Panic last night and started the Steel Angel Kurumi series today, I have all 3 seasons to go though
