Destination Moon circa 1950's. Based on a Heinlein short story. Some of its depictions of a moon journey and landing turned out to be very accurate.

The Day the Earth Stood Still - the original with Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal.
Gort---- Klaatu barada nicto!

2001 - very weird and visual. Also one of the few sci fi movies about space travel where there is no sound in the vacuum of space.

Forbidden Planet. Leslie Nielson has a non-comedy role in this movie. It is based on Shakespear's "King Lear".

Empires Strikes Back
Alien & Aliens
District 9
Inception
Star Trek
Spaceballs (Best spoof of the sci fi genre)

That was actually The Tempest which was the inspiration for Forbidden Planet.

12 (or twelve) Monkeys is one of the most subtle and effective sci-fi movies ever made. You truly have to watch it 2 or 3 times to realize there are clues scattered throughout the film that this is not the first time this adventure has happened to these characters. Brilliant script and acting.

2001 is a favorite that I regard as a great film with great flaws. But it's best moments outshine the worst. The opening with the apes is a bit much.

I'll go on record as the first to say I enjoy BOTH versions of "The Thing". I look forward to the prequel. The original is unique unto itself, and the remake is one of the darkest, most claustrophobic, utterly paranoid films ever made. Not to mention it's full of shocking special effects.

Watched Species 2 a few hours ago. Solid and entertaining, but nowhere as good as the first one and nowhere good enough to make a favorite or classics list.
